Alabama Credential Guide
Alabama ESOL P–12 Certification Requirements
Issued by Alabama State Department of Education.
Already hold an Alabama teaching certificate? Check the test-based addition first. If you want a degree route, Alabama separates traditional Class A preparation from Alternative Class A preparation for eligible applicants without that teaching certificate.

Alabama ESOL Certification Choice
Use Your Current Certificate to Choose the ESOL Route
Alabama treats English for Speakers of Other Languages P–12 as a teaching field. A teacher adding that field by test, a certified teacher entering a traditional Class A program, and an applicant entering Alternative Class A have different starting requirements.
Check your Alabama Professional Educator Certificate, then compare your test result with the state's ESOL P–12 assessment listing. The current assessment manual names Praxis 5362 and a required score of 155. Apply for the additional teaching field through ACE after confirming eligibility.
The current chapter requires a valid bachelor's-level professional educator certificate for unconditional admission to a Class A teaching-field program. Ask the Alabama university's certification officer how its ESOL program leads to the Class A recommendation.
Alternative Class A is a separate entry route
The current chapter allows eligible applicants with a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited institution to seek Alternative Class A admission, subject to its GPA, testing, background-check, and teaching-field conditions. Ask a provider whether its approved Alternative Class A program is specifically in ESOL P–12.
If a program offers both degree and nondegree TESOL study, request the exact state certification outcome in writing before enrolling.

Program Decision
Ask for the Certification Outcome, Not Just the ESOL Course List
The state warns that universities' ESL, ESOL, and TESOL offerings may or may not lead to P–12 teacher certification. Its current ESOL preparation rule also requires field placements in both P–6 and 6–12 classrooms; the internship generally spans both levels unless qualifying experience at the other level meets the rule. Ask a provider to identify the credential recommendation and placement plan, not just its ESOL course list.
Send the provider your current teaching field and certificate class. Ask whether its ESOL program leads to an Alabama Class A recommendation, or is only a non-certification award.
Alabama describes a separate certificate-reciprocity process. Ask the state to review that certificate before treating the Alabama add-field or Class A route as available to you.
Ask whether an approved Alternative Class A ESOL program accepts your degree and how its preparation leads to initial Alabama certification. A stand-alone TESOL certificate is not that route.
