Choose by Outcome
The Same Degree Title Can Serve Different Careers
Licensed K-12 Teacher
Look for advanced classroom practice and a clearly documented state endorsement route.
Initial-License Candidate
Confirm that the track includes approved teacher preparation, not only graduate TESOL courses.
Adult or International Educator
Prioritize teaching practice and the qualifications expected by your intended employers.
Research or Higher Education
Examine methods training, thesis options and preparation for later doctoral study.
Read Beyond the Degree Title
Compare the actual curriculum and culminating work. A thesis, capstone, teaching practicum and comprehensive exam develop different evidence of learning.
- Curriculum
- Language learning, pedagogy, assessment, curriculum design and the populations emphasized.
- Practice
- Observed teaching, clinical placement or work-based inquiry and who supervises it.
- Research
- Methods preparation and whether a thesis or independent study is available.
- Credential
- The exact state recommendation, if any, separate from the master’s award.
Published Program Examples
What Changes When the Intended Outcome Changes?
Both programs award a TESOL master's. Their published requirements point to different decisions. These examples show how to read a program, not which program fits your state.
NYU Steinhardt: MA in TESOL, K–12
NYU's 39-credit initial-certification track leads to eligibility for New York State initial TESOL certification for all grades. It includes one semester of fieldwork and two semesters of supervised student teaching in New York City schools.
The admissions constraint: Before enrollment, applicants need a liberal arts major or 30 credits in one liberal arts concentration, plus 12 credits in a language other than English. NYU evaluates transcripts during the application process.

UNI lists a 33-credit, two-year program delivered online, with live Tuesday and Wednesday evening sessions in Central time. Its stated audiences include K–12 teachers, international teaching and intensive English programs.
The credential boundary: UNI explicitly says this MA does not confer teacher licensure. Its page separately describes ELL endorsement coursework and a state application for teachers who qualify.
Read UNI's program and credential termsIf you need your first school teaching license, start with a track that names initial certification and inspect its placement geography. If you already teach, ask whether the degree's coursework meets your state's add-on rule. If your goal is adult or international English teaching, compare curriculum and supervised teaching with the employers you intend to approach.

Online Study Across State Lines
Your Location Can Change the Licensure Answer
An online program may enroll students nationally while supporting licensure in fewer states. Confirm the institution’s written determination for your location and learn who arranges any local practicum.
- May a resident of my state enroll in this track?
- Does the institution state that it meets my state’s educational requirements?
- Can every placement and live requirement be completed where I live?
- What is the process if the state’s rules change?
Applying to the Right Track
Read the Admissions Rules for Your Intended Outcome
A track for licensed teachers may ask for a current license. An initial-preparation track may have a separate clinical application. Request the checklist for the track you actually want.
- Prior degree, transcripts, references and statement requirements.
- License status or prerequisite courses for your track.
- Placement eligibility and any state-specific disclosure for your residence.
- Whether completers receive a credential recommendation or only the degree.
Program Price
Compare the Full Cost of Each Master’s Track
Get a current written estimate from each program. Compare required credits and the expected completion pattern alongside tuition.
- Tuition, mandatory fees and any higher rate for your residence or format.
- Practicum travel, testing and licensure application charges if relevant.
- Assistantship duties, tuition coverage and renewal terms if offered.
- Course availability and the cost of an extra term if sequencing changes.
Questions That Separate Look-Alike Programs
- Which students and teaching settings is this program designed around?
- Does completion lead to a state recommendation, and for exactly which credential?
- Can an out-of-state online student complete every field requirement locally?
- Is a thesis, capstone, practicum or comprehensive examination required?
- What happens if my state declines to accept the program for endorsement?
