The eight steps
- Check the school and campus. Confirm SEVP certification and the specific course with its designated school official.
- Apply and document funds. Follow the school’s published requirements for your program and intake.
- Obtain and check Form I-20. Confirm your name, course and dates. Ask the school to correct errors.
- Pay the applicable I-901 SEVIS fee. Follow official instructions and retain the receipt.
- Complete DS-160 and pay applicable visa fees. Follow the instructions for the consulate handling your application.
- Arrange the required appointment. Check current interview availability and document instructions.
- Complete consular processing. Additional processing or documents may be required; approval is not guaranteed.
- Plan travel after issuance. New students cannot enter on a student visa more than 30 days before the program start date.
What it costs
Confirm applicable amounts and any additional issuance or other charges before paying. Budget separately for travel to the consulate, document costs and your study trip. Do not assume a fee is refundable if the visa is refused.

The postponed 2026 rule
A federal court postponed the September 15, 2026 effective date of the fixed-period admission rule while litigation continues. The existing duration-of-status framework remains in place for now, and the fixed-period and extension procedures in that rule are not currently operative. This can change through later court action, so check the current status and your admission record with your designated school official before relying on a deadline.
Read the official final rule and the September 14 court-status summary naming the case and order. This status was checked 2026-09-29 and is scheduled for recheck by 2026-10-02. Do not apply the postponed rule's four-year or grace-period statements to a current case.
