What documents do you actually need?
Use this planning checklist alongside the current instructions from your school and the relevant consulate. Required documents depend on your course, nationality and immigration route. Weekly hours alone do not establish visitor-study eligibility.

Every document, and who checks it
The list looks long until you filter it by route. Most people on a short course need six of these; only full-time US students need all twelve.

What you need by route
Short recreational course during a tourist visit: confirm eligibility first

- The visa or travel authorization required for your circumstances
- Return flight booking
- Accommodation confirmation
- Insurance and a bank statement
Weekly hours alone do not establish permission to study as a visitor. Language training generally requires the student route; the visitor exception is for a short recreational, non-credit course during a tourist visit. Confirm the specific course and your circumstances before booking. Follow the official document checklist for your route; this planning list is not exhaustive.
Full-time US study on an F-1
Follow the student visa checklist, which includes the items below. ESTA is not a substitute for a student visa.
- Form I-20 from a SEVP-certified school
- SEVIS I-901 receipt ($350)
- DS-160 confirmation page ($185 fee paid)
- Financial evidence for the amount and period required by the school and consulate
- Evidence of ties to your home country for the interview
Traps worth knowing
- Name spelling. Check identifying details against your passport and ask the issuing office to correct errors before your appointment.
- Passport validity. Confirm the rule and any nationality exceptions with the relevant consulate before travel.
- Travel authorization is checked at boarding. The airline will not let you on the plane without it, so it is not something you can sort out on arrival.
- Bank statements have a shelf life. Ask the school and consulate how recent your statements must be and which formats they accept.
- Carry paper. Print the enrollment letter, accommodation booking and insurance certificate. Phone batteries die in immigration halls and there is rarely wifi.
Common questions
What documents do I need to study English abroad?
Use your school’s and consulate’s current checklists for the specific course and route. Student visa applicants generally need a passport, Form I-20, application confirmation and applicable fee receipts, with supporting financial and academic evidence as requested.
Do I need TOEFL or IELTS to join an English language school?
Requirements vary by course. Ask the school which test, minimum score or placement assessment applies, including any separate pathway progression conditions.
How much money do I need to show for a student visa?
Confirm the required amount, covered period, acceptable evidence and sponsor documents with the school and consulate. Do not treat a recorded budget figure as a universal financial requirement.
Do my documents need to be translated?
Follow the receiving school’s and consulate’s instructions for translation, certification, originals and copies. Requirements depend on the document and application.
