What is an Exam preparation program?

A course built backwards from a test date. Rather than working through general proficiency levels, the syllabus covers the specific task types on TOEFL, IELTS or a Cambridge exam (the timed writing formats, the listening note-taking, the speaking prompts) and most of the class time goes on practice under exam conditions. Schools usually require a minimum entry level, because exam technique on top of insufficient English does not raise a score.

Does an Exam preparation program need a student visa?

Weekly hours alone do not establish permission to study as a visitor. Language training generally requires the student route; the visitor exception is for a short recreational, non-credit course during a tourist visit. Confirm the specific course and your circumstances before booking.

Who this course suits

  • Anyone with a specific score requirement and a deadline to meet it
  • Students who already have the language but keep missing the band they need
  • Applicants whose degree program will not accept a pathway completion in place of a test

Who it does not suit

Building general English. A student placed below the entry level will spend the course learning the format of questions they cannot yet answer.

The pathway route may remove the need for the test entirely

If the score is only needed for admission to a degree at that same institution, completing the top level of its university pathway program often satisfies the language requirement without a test at all. Ask the admissions office, not the language school, which of the two it will accept. They are frequently different departments with different answers.

Questions to ask the school

  1. What is the entry level, and what happens if the placement test puts me below it
  2. Is the exam fee included in the tuition, or paid separately to the test center
  3. Is the test center on campus, and is a seat on my target date actually available
  4. How many full timed practice tests are in the course

The email template puts these in a form a school will answer.

Weekly hours help compare schedules but do not decide your visa route. These are the programs whose recorded schedules sit within 20–25 hrs/week. This hours comparison does not confirm that they offer exam preparation.

How many hours a week is an exam preparation course?

Schools describe this format as 20–25 hrs/week. Ask the school to confirm instructional hours in writing. A typical range does not establish immigration eligibility. Across the programs whose class hours we have confirmed from their own published pages, the full-time load runs 20 to 23 hours a week.

Which schools offer exam preparation courses?

We do not publish a list, because we cannot yet verify one. The two directories this site is built from, the CEA accredited-sites export and the EnglishUSA member directory, record the program, its location and its contact details, but neither records which course formats each program runs, and schools describe their own offerings in language that does not compare cleanly. Rather than guess, the 437 programs are listed in the directory with the school's own website and phone number, so you can ask.
