Studying English in the UK as a Standard Visitor
Can you study in the UK without a student visa?
An English course of up to six months at an accredited UK institution may fit the Standard Visitor route. You must meet visitor eligibility and entry-document requirements as well. An ETA costs £20 where required; a Standard Visitor visa costs £135. Ordinary employment is generally prohibited, with specific exceptions in the visitor rules.
For comparison only. ApplyESL lists English-language programs in the United States and none in the United Kingdom, so this page explains the UK rule but cannot point you at a UK school. It is here because the six-month limit is the rule most people weigh the US against.

The six-month rule
The UK takes a different approach from the United States, and for short courses it is a considerably simpler one. Check the course length, provider and your personal visitor eligibility. Neither country’s rules should be reduced to a single number.
An intensive timetable does not by itself rule out this UK visitor-study route. Confirm the complete course, institution, permitted stay and entry conditions. US language-study rules are different and require a separate assessment; do not transfer a UK permission or a weekly-hours rule to a US trip.
Which permission you need
| Your nationality | Before you travel | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Travelers eligible for an ETA: check nationality and exemptions | Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) | £20 |
| Travelers required to obtain a visitor visa: check official eligibility | Standard Visitor visa, applied for in advance | £135 |
An ETA is not a visa. It authorizes you to travel to the border, where a Border Force officer still decides whether to admit you. Applications are online and usually approved within days, though allow longer in peak season.
The course must be with an accredited provider
This is the condition people trip over. Study on the visitor route must be at an accredited institution that meets the visitor rules. Check the institution against the requirements in theofficial visitor-study guidance. An academy or state-funded school does not qualify for this route.
Ask for the accreditation body and check it before paying a deposit. A school that cannot answer that question quickly is a school to avoid for other reasons too.
Carry your enrollment letter. Border Force may ask what you are doing in the UK. A letter naming the school, the course, the dates and the accreditation answers the question in one move.
What you cannot do
- Ordinary employment. Work for a UK company and self-employment are generally prohibited. Specific permitted activities, including qualifying volunteering, have separate conditions in the visitor rules.
- Extend beyond six months simply to continue an ordinary English course. Shorter visitor permission may allow an extension up to six months; check the official extension conditions.
- Switch to a Student visa in-country. You must leave and apply from outside.
- Claim public funds. Visitor conditions prohibit claiming these benefits.
- Assume healthcare is free. NHS charging is separate from public-funds rules. In England, some services and people are exempt from charges, while hospital care may be chargeable. Check official healthcare guidance for your circumstances and destination within the UK, and arrange suitable coverage.
- Use an academy or state-funded school for this visitor-study route.
If you want to stay longer than six months
Two routes, depending on how much longer:
- Short-term study visa: specifically for English language courses longer than six months and no longer than eleven months. Costs £228 plus a healthcare surcharge, usually £776, applied for in advance, and cannot be extended. This is the natural next step for a serious language year.
- Student visa: requires a licensed student sponsor, a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, financial evidence and any applicable tuberculosis screening. Work permission depends on the sponsor, course and visa conditions; some students have no employment permission. Check Appendix Student.
For most people taking a language course, six months on the visitor route is more than enough, and the simplicity is worth a great deal, and it is a distinct rule to check separately from US visitor-study requirements.
Common questions
Can I study English in the UK without a student visa?
The Standard Visitor route can permit an English course of up to six months at an accredited institution. You must also meet visitor eligibility and entry-document requirements. Weekly hours alone do not decide eligibility.
How long can I study in the UK as a visitor?
For the ordinary English-course route described here, the course must be no more than six months long and fit your permitted stay. Different rules apply to distance learning and certain other study activities. Longer English study may require a Short-term study or Student visa.
Do I need to apply for a UK visitor visa in advance?
Check the official UK entry-document tool using your nationality, passport and circumstances. You may need a visitor visa or an ETA before travel, or qualify for an exemption. An ETA does not guarantee entry. British and Irish passport holders and people with existing UK permission have different requirements.
What is an ETA and do I need one?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation is a pre-travel permission for non-visa nationals, similar to the American ESTA. It costs £20, is applied for online, and is usually approved within days. It is not a visa. It authorizes travel to the border, where a Border Force officer still decides admission.
Can I work while studying in the UK as a visitor?
Ordinary paid or unpaid work for a UK company and self-employment are generally prohibited. The visitor rules permit specific activities, including qualifying volunteering and certain permitted engagements. These exceptions do not create general work rights for English-language students; check the exact activity before accepting it.
Can I extend a Standard Visitor stay to keep studying?
If your visitor permission is shorter than six months, an extension up to six months may be possible under the visitor rules. You cannot extend beyond six months simply to continue an ordinary English course or switch from a visitor visa to a Student visa inside the UK. Check the official extension and application requirements.
