Do you need a study permit for Canada?
Canada's short-course exemption applies to a program of six months or less that will finish within the stay authorized on entry. Check your entry-document requirements separately. Longer study generally requires a study permit; confirm the route and timing for your circumstances before traveling.
For comparison only. ApplyESL lists English-language programs in the United States and none in Canada, so this page explains the Canadian rule but cannot point you at a Canadian school. It is here because the six-month exemption is the rule most people weigh the US against.

The six-month exemption
Under section 188(1)(c), a course or program of six months or less qualifies for the short-course exemption when it will finish within the stay authorized on entry. Check the full study plan and your admission conditions.
A short intensive timetable does not itself exclude a course from this exemption. The complete program must meet the duration and authorized-stay conditions. US language-study rules need a separate assessment; neither a Canadian exemption nor weekly classroom hours establish permission to study in the United States.
What you still need
The permit exemption is not an entry exemption. You need the ordinary authorization for your nationality:

An eTA is applied for online and usually approved within minutes, though a minority of applications are held for review, so do not leave it to the airport. It is linked to your passport and generally lasts up to five years or until that passport expires, whichever comes first. Selected visa-required travelers may qualify for an eTA for air travel; check IRCC eligibility and exemptions.
Watch the gap between course length and admission length. The exemption covers a six-month course, but a border officer decides how long you may stay. Visitors are normally admitted for six months from the date of entry, so a course finishing on exactly the last day leaves no margin. Plan to finish two or three weeks before your authorized stay ends.
When to get a study permit anyway
The exemption is optional, not compulsory. Applying for a permit is worth the cost and delay if:
- You might study longer. Check the appropriate permit process before extending your program. Eligibility to apply from inside Canada is limited; do not assume that an application authorizes new study.
- You are considering a longer program afterward, such as a college pathway. Review admission, study-permit and timing requirements for that program separately.
- Confirm employment rules separately. A study permit alone does not establish permission to work. Students enrolled only in English or French as a second language do not qualify for the standard off-campus student-work exemption. Check IRCC’s requirements before planning any work.
Check whether the short-course exemption fits your complete study plan and authorized stay. A return booking alone does not establish eligibility.
Limits and traps
Check the current IRCC fee list and eTA guidance before applying. Fees and exemptions depend on the application.
- No automatic work rights. Visitor admission or a short-course exemption does not authorize employment. A study permit also does not by itself establish on-campus or off-campus work eligibility.
- Check the complete program. Do not split a longer study plan into short bookings and assume the exemption applies. Ask IRCC how the rule applies to the actual program you intend to complete.
- Extending from inside Canada is limited. Plan the length correctly before you travel rather than assuming flexibility later.
- Confirm health coverage. Check provincial eligibility and arrange suitable travel and medical insurance. Do not assume your course enrollment provides public health coverage.
- Biometrics may be required if you need a visitor visa, an extra appointment and CAD $85.
Compare the complete rules in each country. Course duration, visitor conditions, entry documents and work authorization are distinct questions; a single number does not resolve them all.

Should I get a study permit anyway for a short course?
Consider your complete study plan, including any later program, before deciding. A permit application has its own eligibility requirements and does not guarantee an extension, admission or work rights. Ask IRCC which application process applies to your circumstances.
