: : About the ESL School

Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Learning from native speaking instructors, students study from a well-developed curriculum designed to enhance their fluency and accuracy and hone their skills in the areas of structure/speaking, conversation, and reading/writing. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. As an added feature, more than 550 American colleges and universities accept the ELS Certification of English in place of the TOEFL in order to admit students to their undergraduate degree programs. ELS Language Centers is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The ELS Center at the Hawai'i Pacific University has hosted hundreds of students from around the world. Recently, the majority of students have come to ELS from Asia, including Japan (25%), Korea (20%), and Taiwan (20%). Students also come from countries in Latin America (5%), Europe (5%), and other countries worldwide.
: : Faculty Qualifications

ELS instructors are highly-qualified, native speaking professionals. Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of ELS instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
: : Housing

ELS provides students with the opportunity to live in an off-campus residence or enjoy a homestay experience. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

The ELS Language Center on the Hawai'i Pacific University campus is located in the city of Honolulu on the naturally beautiful island of O'ahu in Hawai'i. O'ahu, known as "the gathering place," is home to 900,000 people, the majority of whom are living in Honolulu, the Hawai'ian state capital. The university's main campus is located in downtown Honolulu in several buildings at the financial, commercial, and governmental center of the city. The windward Hawai'i Loa campus is located in Kaneohe, about eight miles from the downtown campus. The windward campus has an academic center, six residence halls, and a cafeteria and is situated on 135 acres in a tropical setting. Although class is usually offered at the Honolulu campus, students may take classes at both campuses with convenient transportation provided by the free shuttle service as well as city bus routes.
Students can enjoy O'ahu's sandy beaches and legendary surf spots such as Waikiki, Sandy Beach, and the North Shore. Waikiki is a neighborhood of Honolulu on the south shore of the island of O'ahu, and famous Waikiki Beach is the shoreline fronting Waikiki and one of the best known beaches in the world. Today the neighborhood and beach are considered the center of the tourist industry in Hawaii, with an abundance of both high-rise resort hotels and historic hotels dating back to the early 20th century.
Hawai'i's weather is very consistent, with only slight temperature changes throughout the year. It is the perfect place for outdoor activities with an average daily temperature of 23 - 29 degrees C (78 - 85 degrees F) throughout the entire year. Other famous attractions nearby include Diamond Head, a once-active volcano, and Pearl Harbor, one of the U.S.'s most historically significant war memorials.
