Utah ESL Status
Associate and Professional Endorsements Mark Different Progress
Utah's Professional ESL endorsement means all six requirement areas are complete. An Associate ESL endorsement can be issued after at least three areas, but it is temporary and cannot be renewed. The specifications allow several kinds of evidence, including university study, an approved local education agency program, relevant graduate study and Praxis 5362.
Map all six competency areas to the current ESL specifications and ask the reviewer what course, program or assessment evidence it accepts for each.
Track the remaining areas and the expiration date. Utah says it ends June 30 of the third year after issue or when the underlying license expires, whichever is earlier.
Ask your employer and licensing office which endorsement status satisfies the exact K–12 language-acquisition assignment before accepting a position.
