Oklahoma Initial Alternative Route

ESL Alternative Placement Starts With a State Evaluation

Oklahoma lists English as a Second Language among the PK–12 subjects eligible for its Alternative Placement Program. This is an initial certification route, so an already licensed teacher seeking an add-on should ask the department for a separate review.

  1. Submit the evaluation application, resume, official transcripts and current fee. The December 2025 requirements describe a bachelor's degree with at least a 2.50 retention GPA, a qualifying terminal degree, or a bachelor's degree plus two years of related work.
  2. After the department evaluates your record, take the subject-area test it assigns and apply for the provisional certificate.
  3. Complete required professional education study and assessment during the provisional period, then apply for the standard certificate. The program allows three years for completion.

Ask the state which ESL test and coursework it assigns to your record before paying for a preparation program. The alternative route does not cover early childhood, elementary or special education areas.
