Ohio TESOL Route

A District-Sponsored Supplemental License Is a Temporary Path

Ohio identifies a standalone PreK–12 TESOL license, an endorsement on an existing teaching license, a district-sponsored supplemental license, and an alternative resident educator route. Their entry conditions and time frames differ.

Which Ohio TESOL route fits your starting point?
RouteStarting condition and purpose
Standalone PreK–12 licenseFor a candidate preparing for a TESOL teaching license through a university program at undergraduate or graduate level.
Add-on endorsementFor a teacher with a valid license in another subject or area who completes an approved TESOL endorsement route.
Supplemental licenseFor a licensed teacher hired by a specific school or district to teach English learners while working toward the TESOL endorsement. District involvement and an assigned mentor matter; this is temporary.
Alternative Resident EducatorA separate alternative initial-licensure path. Ask the state whether your degree and preparation meet its current entry rules.

Get the district's and licensure office's written path to a full TESOL credential before treating a supplemental license as the endpoint.
