North Carolina Add-Area Decision
Check Your License Type Before Choosing a Test or Coursework
North Carolina lists ESL license areas for K–6 and K–12. Its add-area application requires a clear current Initial Professional License or Continuing Professional License. Several provisional and permit license types cannot use that application.
The state describes add-area routes through an approved content exam, approved educator preparation program, or 24 semester hours with grades of C or better. Check which route applies to the ESL area and your license.
The K–12 ESL area may be issued to a fully licensed out-of-state applicant or through an approved alternate route. Ask NCDPI which evidence it needs before buying more coursework.
For the add-area application, assemble supporting transcripts or scores and the required online statement. The application has a nonrefundable fee.
