Arrival guide
US arrival checklist for English language students
What to arrange before your US English course starts
Confirm the actual school, course, start date, immigration route, housing and first-week instructions before booking. Keep your school's contact details and required documents accessible during travel. After entry, check your admission record when applicable and report to your school as instructed.
This is a planning checklist, not a visa decision or a list of purchases required by the US government. Your school and the relevant authorities decide the instructions that apply to you.
Before you fly: get the school-specific answers
- Confirm the course and start date. Ask the school which campus and classroom you will attend, when orientation or placement begins, and when it expects you to check in. A published calendar may have several start dates and course tracks.
- Confirm your travel documents and entry route. Follow the school and official instructions for your circumstances. The US visa planning checker organizes questions, while the F-1 guide and visitor-study guide explain distinct routes. Do not choose a route from weekly hours alone.
- Get the housing address and arrival plan. Ask when you may move in, who to contact if your flight is delayed, whether airport pickup is offered, and how long the trip to your actual classroom takes. Check the housing cancellation terms before paying.
- Keep a written school contact. Save the admissions or designated school official's contact details offline. Use the school email template to ask for missing instructions, fees or documents.
At the border and after entry
Carry the travel documents required for your own entry route where you can reach them. If you are an F-1 student, check your school's instructions and the Department of Homeland Security's student lifecycle guide before departure. Admission is decided at the port of entry, not by ApplyESL or an ESTA approval alone.
US Customs and Border Protection says the Form I-94 is normally an electronic admission record for air and sea arrivals. When applicable, retrieve your latest record through the official CBP I-94 service and check your name, class of admission and other details. Ask your school or CBP how to correct a suspected error; do not rely on a screenshot from an unofficial service.
Follow the school's arrival and check-in instructions promptly, especially if you are studying in F-1 status. The school's designated school official manages its student-status records. If travel is delayed or your start date changes, contact the school before assuming you can join a later class.
Your first week: housing, health and a working phone
Locate your classroom, placement or orientation appointment, housing contact and practical route between them. Ask whether your school has a required health-insurance plan or accepts an alternative; compare coverage dates, exclusions, deductibles and cancellation terms before buying. Insurance costs are not automatically included in a tuition quote.
For mobile service, first check whether your device is unlocked and supports the proposed SIM or eSIM, then compare local coverage, data allowance, total price and renewal terms. A local SIM, eSIM, international roaming plan or temporary Wi-Fi can each work in different circumstances. ApplyESL currently has no phone-service partner recommendation or affiliate link.
Budget for the costs outside tuition
A quoted school tuition figure may exclude application charges, books, housing deposits, food, transportation, health insurance, flights and applicable immigration fees. Add only costs that apply to your route and confirm whether a school fee is separately payable. The study-cost calculator starts from sourced tuition and leaves the other fields for your own figures; a partial result is labeled as a subtotal.
Compare the school's written fee schedule and refund policy with your estimate before committing. If you have a shortlist, open each school profile for dated source links and a before-apply question list. UK and Canadian visa comparison guides are separate from this US-only school catalog.

Common questions
What should I confirm before traveling to a US English program?
Confirm your exact course start and school check-in instructions, the classroom and housing addresses, how you will travel between them, your itemized charges, and the immigration documents required for your own route. Do not assume a directory listing is an enrollment confirmation.
How do I check my US arrival record?
After entry, eligible travelers can obtain their most recent Form I-94 admission record through the official US Customs and Border Protection I-94 service. Review the class of admission and details; ask the school or CBP about an apparent error.
Do I need a particular eSIM or insurance policy to study English in the US?
ApplyESL does not recommend a particular provider. Confirm any insurance rule with your school and compare coverage, exclusions, dates and price. For mobile service, check that your phone supports the plan, local coverage, data allowance and cancellation terms. Neither purchase replaces your school or immigration requirements.
