- Surrounding Area
- Home to 600,000 city residents and 1.2 million in the metro area, New Orleans exudes a magical air unlike any other city in the United States. Known as the "Crescent City" because of its location on a great bend of the Mississippi River, New Orleans has a rich history dating as far back as 1718. The city’s architecture, food, and way of life are infused by a number of colorful cultures, most notable being French, Spanish, and Caribbean; many of New Orleans’ street names are French, the city’s famous wrought iron balconies and charming courtyards are of Spanish origin, and the Creole cuisine that makes New Orleans famous is a mix of European, African and Caribbean tastes. Recognized as the "Birthplace of Jazz," New Orleans offers music enthusiasts plenty of opportunities to listen to blues, rock & roll, local Cajun and zydeco music and, most notably, classic jazz year-round and at the famous Jazz and Heritage Festival held in late April, early May each year. New Orleans residents enjoy a semi-tropical climate, with temperatures averaging 13°C during the winters and getting as high as 35°C during the summers.

Loyola Intensive English Program
- Overview
- The Loyola Intensive English Program (LIEP) prepares students from around the world to use English in academic, professional, and social settings. With a rigorous curriculum, LIEP is ideal for students who want to improve their overall English skills and prepare for course work at universities in the United States. LIEP courses are offered three times a year with sessions starting in spring, summer and fall. Spring and fall sessions run 16 weeks and the summer semester is 8 weeks long. Students enrolled at Loyola will receive 20 hours of classroom instruction each week and an additional 2 hours per week of individual tutoring.
LIEP offers students two levels of English training; intermediate and advanced. Each level consists of courses in writing/grammar, reading, listening/speaking, and an elective course. Some of the elective courses offered include Cultural Exploration, Discussion of U.S. American Topics, Public Speaking, Film Study, and Test Skills. During a typical week of classes, students will alternate taking listening/speaking classes or writing/grammar classes followed by reading class in the morning and then the student’s chosen elective course in the afternoon. All full-time LIEP students will meet with a private tutor for 2 hours per week to supplement their studies. Evaluations are done at mid-term and at the end of the semester and are based on the overall quality of the student’s work including completion of class assignments, test scores, class participation and attendance. For students interested in applying to Loyola or taking academic courses at the university, LIEP offers a Pilot Program where students can take two academic courses at the university along with two courses in the Intensive English Program. All students have the opportunity to observe academic classes at Loyola each semester. Outside of class, cultural activities are planned by the staff every semester. Activities include celebrations of traditional New Orleans customs and American holidays, tours around New Orleans, trips to beaches in neighboring Florida and Alabama and regular outings to the French Quarter, jazz clubs, museums and sporting events.
Small, interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Class sizes average 10 students per classroom. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. - Data

I learned presentation and communication skills. LIEP also get their students to participate in special events such as carving pumpkins and taking them to different places in New Orleans. I also love that they give each student a tutor during the semester.
