  • Established in 1977, the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) at the University of North Texas (UNT) is one of the largest and most prestigious English language programs in the United States. The mission of the IELI is to provide the highest quality academic preparatory English language training for international students seeking admission to the University of North Texas or other U.S. institutions of higher education. IELI offers a variety of English programs to help international students develop the English communication and academic skills that are needed to succeed at a university or college in the United States. In addition, the IELI strives to provide a wide variety of student services for international students living in the United States. All IELI students have a full-time student advisor who provides academic counseling and assistance with immigration and housing issues. Students are actively encouraged to participate in a complete program of social, recreational and cultural activities provided by the school. The IELI has full accreditation from CEA (The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation) and is a proud member of UCIEP (University and College Intensive English Programs), an independent consortium of university and college-administered intensive English Programs in the United States, and EnglishUSA (The American Association of Intensive English Programs) which promotes professional standards and quality instruction in intensive English programs.

  • IELI students are encouraged to live on campus in university dormitories for at least their first semester so they have time to search for a good apartment and roommate if they decide to later live off-campus. To live in campus dormitories, students must apply online through the Housing department at the university. Descriptions of available dorm rooms are provided on the UNT housing website.   • The IELI is located on the main campus of the University of North Texas which is situated in the small, safe and friendly southern city of Denton, Texas. Denton has a warm climate, a population of over 110,000 people and is located 40 miles (30 kilometers) north of the major metropolitan cities of Dallas and Fort Worth where close to 6,000,000 people live. The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is the economic and cultural hub of the region commonly called North Texas and is the largest metropolitan area in the state and the fourth largest in the United States. Denton, which is growing rapidly, is fast becoming one of the most popular places to visit in Texas and was recently named on a list of one of the “Top 100 Best Places to Live in America”. The city is home to several annual fairs and events that are popular with both local residents and tourists alike. Denton offers an affordable cost of living and a pleasant college town atmosphere which international students can enjoy. Reflective of the lively music culture in Denton, the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival is an event which attracts over 200,000 people from around the country for live music, food, crafts and recreation. In fact, Denton is well known as a popular area for famous Jazz musicians and fans alike. In addition, the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo is an exciting event which promotes the well-known “cowboy culture” of the great state of Texas. Some of the attractions of the Metroplex area include, Six Flags Over Texas, the nationally-acclaimed amusement park; Hurricane Harbor, one of the largest water parks in the nation, The Ballpark at Arlington, home of the beloved Texas Rangers professional baseball team and Cowboys Stadium, which is the largest domed stadium in the world and home to the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys. Also nearby is the Fort Worth Zoo, the Dallas Zoo, various art museums, clubs, restaurants, and endless nightlife entertainment options.

  • Conditional Admission / Credit Courses
  • The University of North Texas offers conditional admission through the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) and waives the TOEFL requirement for IELI graduates to many undergraduate and graduate programs. To be eligible, students must possess an academic record which qualifies them for admission to the university and must complete Level 6 of the IELI program or provide additional proof of acceptable English language proficiency.

  • Overview
  • The IELI English Language Program offers five 8-week sessions year-round. Students can choose to begin their classes either in the fall, spring or summer. Students enrolled in IELI receive 23 hours of classroom instruction each week. Class instruction includes 20 hours of core classes (Including 10 hours of communication and 10 hours of writing) and 3 hours of speaking/lab classes.
    
    The Intensive English Program offers 7 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. Upon their arrival at the IELI, students take a placement test on the first day of orientation which will place the student in the appropriate level. The placement test includes listening, reading, grammar and composition.
    
    The IELI’s Intensive English Program curriculum is primarily designed to academically prepare students who plan to enter an undergraduate or graduate degree program at the University of North Texas or another American college or university. Students will receive challenging instruction focused on improving reading, listening, speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary, critical thinking and test-taking skills. Emphasis is placed on developing each student’s overall communication abilities while increasing their confidence in using English to convey information as well as expressing original ideas. Individualized support is also given to students as each teacher schedules two hours outside of class each week for additional tutoring and help for students.
    
    Class sizes generally range from 11 to 14 per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.

    Very Rich Experience!
    

    Being a student at IELI was amazing. It was a very rich experience that improved my English and put me on the track to success in my graduate study. I was taught by very good and talented instructors who made the language fun to study and who have become friends of mine. IELI has helped me to improve all of my English skills. Nowadays, people in my university and in the city that I live in find it hard to believe that I was not born in the States because of the way I speak, talk, and write.     I'm a full time PhD student at UNT
    

    Before I came to the US, I had never spoken English in daily life except in English class in school about 20 years ago. I started in Level 2 Writing and Level 3 Communication. Now, I'm a full time PhD student at UNT. I'm also working a part time job in the IELI Computer Lab as a lab assistant. I think I couldn't have studied at UNT or in the USA without studying at IELI first. Studying English is very hard, but as international students, we have to do it! I would suggest to IELI students that they manage their time not only for studying in class and doing homework but also for relaxing, having fun, and hanging out with friends sometimes. When IELI students have troubles, my advice is "Go talk to your teacher!"

    IELI instructors and staff members are professional
    

    Graduating from Graduated Preparation Course (GPC) has made my life a lot easier in graduate school in the USA.
    Not only presentation skills but also academic writing skills and analytical skills are adequately taught in GPC. The anxiety and the difficulty in my MBA classes, as a result, have been reduced. It was worth it to spend my time and money in this intensive English class before I started my first semester at UNT. IELI instructors and staff members are professional. They are willing to help every international student at IELI to be ready for their future. IELI is incredible. Making friends, learning different cultures, improving English skills, and preparing for university-level classes in the USA are what every student will obtain from IELI.

    I chose UNT because of its strong music program and famous faculty members. I am able to attend a variety of music concerts, and the cost is reasonable. During the Summer II term, I took a music research class. I had heard this class was the most challenging class that students take when studying for their Music Master's degree. However, I took the class easily because of IELI's Level 5 and 6 classes. I had already learned how to write a paper, how to search for valuable sources, and how to paraphrase sentences while studying at IELI.

    I studied in IELI for 10 months, and I loved it very much. All of the teachers were nice and patient, and I enjoyed every minute.
