- About the ESL Program
- The Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) was established in 1966. CESL's primary goal is to engage non-native English speakers in an outstanding curriculum in order to prepare them with the academic abilities and language skills essential to succeed at an American university, either at the undergraduate or graduate level. Housed jointly with the new School of Languages and Linguistics that offers academic training in TESOL, CESL provides supervised teaching opportunities for graduate students and serves as a focal point for the advancement of teaching and research in the ESL field. CESL is fully accredited by CEA (The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation) and a proud member of UCIEP (University and College Intensive English Programs).

- While attending CESL, students have the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories or in off-campus residences. In either case, they can interact with native English speakers. Lodging in the Carbondale area is very inexpensive, so students can easily choose from a wide variety of options. For more information, feel free to contact the school directly.

- The Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) campus is located in peaceful Carbondale, Illinois, a true college town that is home to 30,000 residents and is ideally situated about 160 km south of St. Louis, Missouri, as well as within easy driving distance of a variety of other cities and attractive locations, including Chicago, Nashville, Memphis, the Great Smokey Mountains, and other locations. Both students and residents alike enjoy the mid-South climate ideal for year-round outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, watching SIUC sports events, and playing sports. Bordered by the spectacular 270,000-acre Shawnee National Forest and surrounded by picturesque lakes ideal for fishing and boating, Carbondale was recently named "The Best Small City in Illinois" in the national publication, "Life in America's Small Cities." Nestled in the "Heartland" region of the United States, Carbondale residents enjoy a low cost of living and a relaxed lifestyle.
- About the College/University
- Founded in 1869, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) is a comprehensive, state-supported institution with an international reputation for excellence among its instructional, research and service programs. SIU offers its 11,000 students more than 200 academic programs leading to bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees. The SIU campus sits on more than 8,000 acres, offering students endless access to numerous athletic fields, several tennis courts, and the Campus Lake, complete with a beach and a boat dock. The Student Recreation Center houses an Olympic-size pool, indoor running tracks, racquetball and squash courts, climbing walls, weight rooms, and basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts. Outside of the classroom, SIU students are actively involved in more than 450 registered student-run clubs, and they regularly organize on-campus events including lectures, concerts, festivals, plays and musicals.

Intensive English Program
- Overview
- The Intensive English Program offers four 8-week sessions throughout the academic year, and an additional 8-week term during the summer. Students enrolled in CESL receive 20 hours of classroom instruction per week.
CESL offers 9 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced, including a level to prepare students for graduate study in a U.S. university or college. This level, Graduate Student English (GSE) is open to students who have completed the regular CESL curriculum and wish to enter graduate school.
In advance of arrival or upon arrival at CESL, students are required to take a placement test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Students who have completed the CESL curriculum are awarded a certificate of completion.
The Program's curriculum begins by focusing on basic English skills, then proceeds to communication skills, and ends by focusing on English for Academic Purposes. Students complement their in-class instruction by making use of software in CESL's computer labs and by meeting regularly with SIU students who volunteer to be CESL students' conversation partners. Courses available to intermediate and advanced-level students, in addition to their 10-hours per week of core (all skills) classes, include Grammar, Listening and Speaking, Writer's Workshop, and American Academic Culture. High-intermediate to advanced-level students can arrange to observe regular University classes of their choice.
Class sizes range from 3 to 18 students. Every effort is made to keep classes at a maximum of 10-11 students for effective English language instruction.
**Initial course placement into the nine-level program is initially determined by your score on an internationally recognized English proficiency exam (such as the Duolingo English Test (DET), TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent). CESL no longer offers each level every term. In order to qualify for admission, students must provide an English proficiency score. If you don’t have a current score, CESL recommends taking the DET.
The DET is an English proficiency test that can be taken online, in your home, in less than 1 hour, and for only $49. All you need is an internet connection and a computer with a camera. DET certified results will be available to you and CESL within 48 hours of taking the test. Please make sure to share your official test results with the Center for English Language (CESL) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale via the DET platform. It makes it possible for me to communicate with people from different countries, to know them, and to new cultures and values. CESL is a great program for you to prepare if you want to go to a university in the US.

Everyone whose native language is not English that wants to study in the U.S. needs to study at CESL. For graduate students CESL is a must. There is a big difference between students that have and have not studied at CESL.

到現在還是很想念在CESL認識的外國朋友，也還有聯絡喔!
若課程較少，學校應該可以多安排一些課外活動，因為SIU的環境很好，
very nature~ 也可以買ㄧ台腳踏車，享受自然環境~
學校各方面設備不錯(電腦、圖書館)，我很喜歡她們的Recreation Center。
當地的外國人也很熱情，因為SIU位於中部，所以不會像美國東西部接受較多外來文化的融合，跟大都市比起來步調較慢，所以若預算有限，SIU是還不錯的選擇。

대학 프로그램에 맞게 체계적이고 수준에 맞게 수업이 진행된다. 대학 내에서의 어학연수라면 말하기가 부족하다고 생각하는데 전혀 아니다. 말하기는 물론 문법에서 대학 생활에 필요한 모든것을 배울 수있다. 그리고 대학에서 이용할 수 있는 모든 것의 혜택을 받을 수 있다. 기숙사, 식당, 스포츠센터, 도서관, 동아리 활동 등등
단지 방학이 되면 도시가 너무 조용하다는 단점이 있지만 그 시간을 이용해 미국 여행을 할 수 있다. 정규 과정을 패스하면 대학 진학의 기회도 주어진다.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.3개월의 수업받은 경험저는 2008년1월에서 3월까지 12주의 영어수업을 받았습니다. 가족이 함께 갔기에 에버그린테라스라는 가족형 아파트에 들어 갔으며 주거환경이 아주 좋았고, 아파트 내에서 자유로운 아이들 이동과 놀이가 가능해 특히 좋았습니다. 학교수업은 철저하게 계획에 따라 진행되는 것을 느낄 수 있었고, 교사에 대한 평가가 정확하게, 그리고 즉시 나오기에 수업 준비가 철저 했습니다. 학교환경, 주변환경이 깨끗하고 유흥시설이 없는 작은 도시에 학교가 위치하고 있어서 학생들의 탈선을 걱정하지 않아도 좋을 것으로 이 학교를 추천합니다. 우리 가족은 미 서부생활비의 절반정도로 생활비로 생활할 수 있었습니다.
