Please Read Carefully Before You Apply
- Your application will be sent directly to the school via email. Be sure to follow the instructions provided and complete the entire application process. In order to ensure the quickest reply, applicants are advised to send all questions DIRECTLY to the school admissions office.
- Some course options may have an application deadline. You are strongly advised to submit your application well before the course start date to ensure you have enough time to fulfill all requirements.
- Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) requires you to pay a US$ 50 application fee. Please note that the school's application fee is NON-REFUNDABLE even if you cancel your application, do not receive your student visa, or are not accepted for admission.
- If you need to use the credit card of a family member or friend, be sure to receive permission ahead of time and inform them of the date and amount of the transaction.
- When submitting your application, prepare to send a copy of your passport, a copy of your bank letter or bank statement, a copy of any available English test scores that meet admissions requirements, and additional forms required. Please follow all instructions carefully in order to complete the enrollment process. You may be able to submit an application and send your supporting documents later in the process.
- You must obtain a student visa in order to legally study abroad and enroll in your chosen English program. When applying for your student visa, you will submit the required forms received from your school, and other documents, to the designated embassy or consulate. We encourage you to apply to your school well in advance of your start date, to give you sufficient time to have your student visa processed.
- For most programs, the application will be valid for one year. After one year, you must apply again.

In addition, a $1000 initial non-refundable tuition deposit might be required before granting admission. This one-time fee indicates your commitment to attend CESL and secures your course enrollment. When you register as a new student, the $1000 deposit will be applied towards the tuition of your first term. Please note that this deposit will not be refunded if you withdraw from CESL before finishing the term.
English Test Score
Instructions:
Initial course placement into the nine-level program is initially determined by your score on an internationally recognized English proficiency exam (such as the Duolingo English Test (DET), TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent). CESL no longer offers each level every term. In order to qualify for admission, students must provide an English proficiency score. If you don’t have a current score, CESL recommends taking the DET.
The DET is an English proficiency test that can be taken online, in your home, in less than 1 hour, and for only $49. All you need is an internet connection and a computer with a camera. DET certified results will be available to you and CESL within 48 hours of taking the test. Please make sure to share your official test results with the Center for English Language (CESL) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale via the DET platform.
