    • The University of San Francisco’s summer Intensive English program (IEP) offers non-credit, non-degree coursework in English as a second language. The program is designed to help non-native English speakers improve their language skills for academic and professional activity. The program has excellent faculty who teach small classes 25 hours per week, give individual instruction, and organize TOEFL workshops and cultural events.

Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive experience teaching English to students from around the world.     • While attending the IEP, students have the opportunity to live in on-campus university dormitories. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students – both American and international. Students must apply for housing through the IEP as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The IEP will provide students with information about available private off-campus apartments however it is the student’s responsibility to make their own arrangements.     • About This Course
    • The Intensive English Program at University of San Francisco is offered in the summers. There are two sessions available: a 4-week and a 6-week. Both sessions begin in July each year. Students can apply in the spring (February) of each year.

      USF offers a serious intensive English language-training program that stresses academic English and university preparation. IEP courses are taught by USF faculty in the Department of Rhetoric & Language. After an initial placement exam, students are put into 1 of 4 levels – high-beginner to advanced. Students learn in small classes for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week.

      Morning classes start at 9:30am with integrated skills, focusing on reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. Students break for lunch at 12:30pm, where they can eat on campus in the cafeteria. Afternoon classes begin at 1:30pm with oral communication skills, focusing on listening, speaking, fluency and pronunciation. Students finish classes at 3:30pm and they can take the afternoon to explore all that San Francisco has to offer.

      Each week there are afternoon coffee hours, where students meet with teachers and classmates to chat about their experiences and make friends. Weekly TOEFL workshops are offered for students interested in taking the TOEFL test at the end of the program.
