- More Details
- Housing
- The ELI provides students with the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories, or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students. The school also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience local culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments are also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
- Surrounding Area
- Staten Island is about four times the size of Manhattan and has a population of approximately 473,000. It is noted for its parks and recreational areas, in addition to several notable cultural sites. Manhattan and other "boroughs" of New York City are easily accessible by public transportation.
The main campus, CSI Willowbrook, is a 204-acre campus and probably the largest university campus in New York City, with green areas around the neighborhood and stores (supermarket, restaurants, pharmacy, and more) at walking distance. A free university bus takes students to the free ferry to Manhattan every 30 minutes.
On the St. George campus, the ELI has a boutique location for those who want to learn English at night, located in the North Shore of Staten Island and conveniently located near restaurants, stores, supermarket, an outlet, and the Staten Island Ferry Terminal which has connections with the public buses and train. - About the College/University
- The College of Staten Island is set on a large campus with woodlands and open spaces. Its attractive facilities include technologically advanced laboratories, a Sports and Recreation Center and a Center for the Performing and Creative Arts.
The school is twenty-five minutes by ferry from Manhattan and students have easy access to the rich cultural life of the City by way of a ferry shuttle ride located on the CSI campus. The ferry shuttle travels directly to the Staten Island ferry.
Students can apply to any of the 50+ undergraduate/graduate programs at CSI or at any other CUNY school after completing ELI and they can have free access to other academic/sports events and activities on campus and free access to the CSI ferry or loop bus. - Conditional Admission / Credit Courses
- After passing the full-time English Language Institute (ELI) Intensive English Program at the College of Staten Island ELI Final Exam with a certificate, students do NOT need a TOEFL score to apply to CUNY undergraduate and graduate programs that require a minimum TOEFL score of 61.
ELI advanced students who get 100 or more on the ELI Final Test will not need a passing TOEFL ITP test to be accepted by a CUNY school. ELI intermediate students who get 100 or more on the ELI Final Test will not need a passing TOEFL ITP test to be accepted by a CUNY school, but they will still need to register in the following ELI advanced term.

Intensive English Program
- Overview
- The ELI offers intensive, comprehensive English language instruction and cultural orientation throughout the year. The program covers all aspects of spoken and written English, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Classes are given at three levels of proficiency, from beginner to advanced. Course content includes the proper use of English structures, fluency and accuracy of expression with acceptable pronunciation, listening and reading comprehension, and writing for personal, academic, and professional purposes. Students communicate in English from the first lesson at the beginner level. At all levels they work on integrated skills, focusing on the active, knowledgeable use of the language, rather than mere passive comprehension.
There are four basic components of the curriculum: Reading and Writing, Grammar, Communications (Conversation) and TOEFL Workshop (test preparation and skill enhancement).
ELI has daytime and evening classes. During the fall and spring semesters, classes meet Tuesday through Friday, generally between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. In the summer session, classes meet Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. Evening classes are from 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm (semester or summer) at the CSI St. George site. Class hours are eighteen per week in the fall and spring and twenty-two hours per week in the summer sessions on the main campus. - Data
