  • Welcome to the English Language and Culture Institute (ELCI) at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). ELCI is the only Intensive English Program in the Twin Ports region and serves as a door to all the programs offered at UMD and the University of Wisconsin Superior (UWS). From the moment our students arrive, we assist them every step of the way. The instructor-to-student ratio is low, and the students feel like part of a close-knit family. While the students take the traditional English classes of Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Listening and Speaking, we intentionally cater each semester's instruction to the specific group of students enrolled. In addition to that, our highly qualified and dedicated instructors offer alternative learning experiences through campus organized summits, lectures, and events. ELCI students have full access to all campus amenities and clubs including the Writing Center which provides opportunities for learning the language in a variety of culturally immersive environments. When students are ready to matriculate to the university, our staff supports them throughout the whole process, so their transition is smooth and uplifting. Not only do we offer strong academic language training, but we are located in the picturesque town of Duluth which is situated on Lake Superior. The majesty of this inland sea infuses everybody and everything. Students can enjoy the beautiful views and take short trips in the surrounding area, rich with natural waterscapes and landscapes.   • Housing
  • Students have the option, while attending the program at the University of Minnesota Duluth, to live in on-campus housing arranged by the school. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students. It’s important to apply early for on-campus housing. It is the student’s responsibility to make their own individual housing arrangements. The program can provide students with information about all available local housing options.

  • Situated on the north shore of Lake Superior at the westernmost point of the Great Lakes, Duluth is the largest metropolitan area, the second-largest city and the largest U.S. city on the lake, and is accessible to the Atlantic Ocean 2,300 miles (3,700 km) away via the Great Lakes Waterway and St. Lawrence Seaway. The Port of Duluth is the world's farthest inland port accessible to oceangoing ships, and by far the largest and busiest port on the Great Lakes.     Intensive English Program
    • The Intensive English Program is CEA-accredited and consists of 20 hours per week of studies (full-time).
    • I-20s can be issued for student visas (F-1).
    • Part-time study is available to students not on a student visa (F-1) sponsored by ELCI.
    
    Short-term Language & Culture Programs (SLCP)
    • Training options include Academic English, General English, or Specialized English.
