  • The Silicon Valley Intensive English Program (SVIEP) is an exciting program of study for students seeking high-quality English language preparation for college. Students who successfully complete SVIEP Level 4 are guaranteed admission into the San Mateo Colleges of Silicon Valley (Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College).
    
    Students take classes in college classrooms with instructors who have a Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics and related fields from the finest American universities; a number of whom are also English as a Second Language (ESL) college instructors. Instructors will get you acquainted with the American college system while helping you to hone your English skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and grammar.     1. SVIEP Offers an Accelerated Pathway to English Proficiency.
    a. SVIEP offers five start dates per year in January, March, June, August, and October.
    b. Each session is 8 weeks long and offers 4 levels of instruction per session.
    
    2. SVIEP Provides Guaranteed Admission to San Mateo Colleges of Silicon Valley
    a. Guaranteed admission to Cañada College, College of San Mateo or Skyline College for students who successfully complete SVIEP Level 4!
    b. Since our launch in Fall 2016, 90% of SVIEP graduates have chosen to matriculate into our three colleges!

    3. SVIEP Accepts Students Age 16 and Older
    a. SVIEP accepts students who are 16 years old with High School diploma or HS Equivalency. Students 18 years or older may provide HS diploma or transcripts.
    i. Students who have completed the Cambridge O Levels or the IGCSE with successful completion of at least 5 courses in the O level with an IGCSE certificate may submit their exam results for acceptance as a High School equivalency.

  • SVIEP provides students with the opportunity to enjoy a homestay experience. The homestay option is ideal for those students who want to experience local culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments are also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, email sviep@smccd.edu to ask the school directly.

  • Situated on the San Francisco Peninsula in the heart of Silicon Valley, Redwood City is one of the largest cities in the County of San Mateo with over 85,000 residents. The city’s slogan, “Climate Best by Government Test”, is testament to its numerous sunny days, an average of 255 days per year. On top of its beautiful weather, Redwood City is an excellent place to live, study and play because of the area’s historical sites, parks, and location. From walking a trail in the reborn redwood forest on the Phleger Estate, exploring history at the San Mateo County History Museum or at Filoli, a historical country house and garden, to enjoying live performances at Fox Theatre, you can be sure to always have something to do.     Associate Degrees, Transfer and Certificate Programs
    
    San Mateo Colleges of Silicon Valley offer Associate Degrees, Transfer Programs and short-term Certificate Programs. Associate Degrees and Transfer Programs typically take two years to finish as students need to complete all necessary graduation and/or transfer requirements (up to 60 degree applicable units/credits) with a required Grade Point Average (GPA). Cañada College and Skyline College offer admission to short-term certificate programs. Contact the college directly for more information on the majors and certificate programs.

• Study Options

  • Intensive English Program / SVIEP Online

  • Overview
  • In this Intensive English Program, students take 4 hours of academic classes a day, 5 days a week. You begin with Reading, Listening & Speaking class, in which your instructor will hone your reading skills by teaching you how to use critical reading strategies, develop your listening skills by exposing you to different types of accents and topics, and refine your speaking skills by providing you with lots of practice in both formal and informal settings. In this class, you will also develop word attack and note-taking skills.
    
    In the second half of the day, you work on your writing and grammar skills in Writing & Grammar class. Grammar covers all the basic tenses (Past, Present, and Future) along with gerunds, infinitives, phrasal verbs, adjective clauses, modals, the passive, conditionals, indirect speech and embedded questions. Depending on your level, you should expect to begin with the basics before progressing to increasingly more difficult grammar. In writing, you will learn how to develop your writing skills from sentence writing to paragraph writing and finally, to essay writing. In Level 4, you will learn to put together a 5-paragraph essay by brainstorming ideas, outlining your essay, drafting, peer and self-editing, and redrafting. The essay types covered include but are not limited to compare/contrast, cause and effect, persuasive/argumentative, and descriptive/narrative. The culminating essay for Level 4 is a research paper.
    Above and beyond your academic classes, two hours a week of instruction will be dedicated to American Culture classes, where you will learn about important customs, behaviors and topics related to living in the United States and developing positive relationships with Americans.
    
    ONLINE SVIEP (Live, Instructor-Led Online Classes)
    
    Without leaving your country, Online SVIEP enables you to participate in live, instructor-led online classes taught by master's level teachers. Online SVIEP continues our mission of preparing students for college or career development through accelerated learning in small classes with personalized attention.   • From San Francisco International Airport:
    It is the students’ responsibility to arrange their own transportation from the airport to campus. Taxis are available at the airport. It will cost approximately US$ 25 and will arrive on campus in 20 minutes.
