- About the ESL Program
- Founded in 1980, the English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) assists students in improving those English language skills necessary to succeed at an American university. ELI teachers are dedicated to providing high-quality English instruction that accommodates individual students' learning needs. Outside of the classroom, the ELI provides students with plentiful opportunities to practice their English with native speakers. Additionally, ELI provides students with both academic (regarding university admissions) and student advising (housing or general assistance) services.
ELI students have access to all of the UTA’s learning and recreational facilities which include an internet-accessible computer lab, audio-visual language lab, full-sized library, athletics facilities, sports fields, and university center – where students can enjoy bowling, billiards, video games, and lounge.
ELI has full accreditation from CEA (The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation) and is a proud member of UCIEP (University and College Intensive English Programs), an independent consortium of university and college-administered intensive English Programs in the United States, and EnglishUSA (The American Association of Intensive English Programs) which promotes professional standards and quality instruction in intensive English programs. - Fast Facts

- Welcome to Texas!
As Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), I am happy to introduce you to our program through ApplyESL.com. UTA is a very good place to live and study - a beautiful and safe campus with many friendly people. The ELI provides our students with English language instruction, develops their academic and communication skills, and expands students' intercultural awareness. Studying overseas will provide you with a wonderful opportunity to meet and make new friends with people from all over the world--and here at the ELI, it is our joy to help enhance your learning experiences. UTA is located in Arlington, Texas, a suburban city in the middle of the large Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Arlington is well-known for its Six Flags Over Texas amusement park, Hurricane Harbor water park, Dallas Cowboys Football Stadium and the Texas Rangers professional baseball team. The city of Fort Worth, located 20 minutes from Arlington, has a charming downtown area, a beautiful cultural district, and a historical Texas district - complete with cowboys and rodeos. I encourage you to read more about our program, and on behalf of everyone here at the ELI, we look forward to meeting you in Arlington, Texas.

- More Details
- Housing
- ELI provides introductory services and basic assistance, but it is the student's responsibility to arrange housing in on-campus dormitories and in off-campus residences. Students living in on-campus dormitories will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students - both American and international. Off-campus residences allow students the opportunity to interact independently in the community found outside of the school campus and offer more privacy. It is best to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. School may introduce private off-campus apartments, but students have to make necessary arrangements by themselves. For more specific information about housing accommodations, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
- Surrounding Area
- The UTA campus is located in the vibrant city of Arlington. Home to 350,000 people, Arlington is one of the cities that composes the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex - one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States. Some of the attractions that students enjoy include: Six Flags Over Texas, the nationally-acclaimed amusement park; Hurricane Harbor, one of the largest water parks in the nation; and The Ballpark at Arlington, home of the beloved Texas Rangers professional baseball team. Also nearby is the Fort Worth Zoo, the Dallas Zoo, various art museums, clubs, restaurants, and endless nightlife entertainment options. Although Arlington and the Metroplex area are becoming more and more busy, students may still appreciate the traditional "cowboy culture" that makes Texas famous, especially in Fort Worth, the city next to Arlington.
- About the College/University
- The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) is a 100-year-old, comprehensive research, teaching and public service institution. As the sixth largest university in Texas, UTA offers 83 bachelors, 69 masters, and 30 doctoral degrees within nine academic units and a graduate school. A modern 390-acre campus a few blocks from downtown Arlington offers easy access to museums, concerts, ballet, theater, family recreation, professional sports and other interests. With an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students, UTA is the third largest among the 15 institutions in The University of Texas System. The student body has become increasingly diversified with students representing 47 states and 89 countries. UTA has an excellent reputation in majors important to international students, such as Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Nursing, Science, Architecture, and Linguistics.
- Conditional Admission / Credit Courses
- Conditional Admission to the university is available for qualified students who complete the ESL program.
*The deadline for Conditional Admission application is 06/20/2018
- Study Options
English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
- Overview
- The Program's curriculum is designed to academically prepare students who plan to enter an undergraduate or graduate degree program at University of Texas Arlington or other universities and those who plan to study English for personal or professional reasons.
The Intensive English Program (IEP) offers eight-week sessions. There are five sessions offered each year. Full-time students enrolled in the IEP receive 20 hours of classroom instruction per week, learning and practicing the skill areas of “Focused Grammar”, “Reading/Writing’ and “Listening/Speaking”. Emphasis is placed on developing students' overall English academic skills while increasing their confidence in using English to convey information as well as express original ideas.
IEP offers 6 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced and the curriculum consists of 3 language proficiency bands; Intermediate, High Intermediate and Advanced. Within each of these three bands, there are 2 levels. Students who wish to advance to the next proficiency band, must complete both levels. Upon their arrival at the ELI, students take an English placement test in order to determine the level best-suited to their ability.
Class sizes generally range from 8 to 17 per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. - Data

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. The ELI Course at UTA Was Wonderful! The ELI course helps students who are interested in entering universities in the US. I felt comfortable using English more than I expected after doing many of the class assignments such as writing essays. The other good thing was that the school is located on the UTA campus, so we could experience the atmosphere of real university life.

The teachers have great enthusiasm to answer each student's questions, so I learned a lot. I advise students who study at ELI to try and get a car when they are there or make friends that have a car so you can easily get around.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful.NO Place Is Better Than UTA for Learning English!!
