  • About the ESL Program
  • Established in 1975, the International Education Programs (IEP) at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) provides non-native English-speaking students with high-quality language instruction to help them attain their personal, academic, and professional goals. Students enrolled in the IEP experience a curriculum designed to improve their reading, writing, conversation, and grammar skills, as well as to enhance their cultural understanding, in preparation for entering a degree program, either at the University of California, Riverside or at other equally prestigious American colleges or universities. The IEP allows students to concentrate on developing their English skills while experiencing the rich culture of a university community. Students gain access to UCR campus facilities and enjoy using the university library, sports center, the student health center, and computer labs with Internet access. Since learning also takes place outside of the classroom, the IEP organizes various social activities to help their students grow accustomed to American culture and to put their newly-acquired English skills into practice. The IEP is a proud member of EnglishUSA, the American Associate of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.

  • While attending the IEP, students have the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories, off-campus residences or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus are close to classes, campus activities and other students – both American and international. IEP students have the opportunity to live off-campus at the International Village. Off-campus housing offers privacy for students who prefer a more independent lifestyle. The IEP also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture as a member of a family and practice their English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The IEP may provide students with information about private off-campus apartments however it is the students’ responsibility to make their individual arrangements.   • The University campus is located in the safe, friendly city of Riverside, a picturesque region of California with a small-town atmosphere that offers big-city services. Once known for its countless citrus groves, palm tree-lined avenues, and subtropical shade trees, Riverside remains a beautiful oasis in the inland area of Southern California. Recently identified as an “All-American City” along with only 9 other cities across the United States, Riverside is a vibrant, culturally diverse center for commerce, finance, industry, and education. With its active visual and performance arts communities, concert venues, fine restaurants, unique shops, and a wide variety of sports and outdoor recreational activities, life in Riverside is dynamic, comfortable, and enjoyable. Residents enjoy the region’s warm and dry climate with cool evenings and temperatures averaging from 24°C to 27°C. Riverside’s summers can get as hot as 34°C while winters can reach as low as 3°C. The city is located in the heart of Riverside County, a region with a population of 1.5 million people and bordering the densely populated counties of Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, and San Bernardino. Riverside is an easy 1-hour drive from the city of Los Angeles, beautiful Pacific Ocean beaches and mountain ski resorts, as well as popular attractions including Disneyland, Universal Studios, and Hollywood, the movie capital of the world.
  • About the College/University
  • Established in 1954, the University of California, Riverside (UCR) is a major research university and one of the ten general campuses of the University of California system, one of the finest public universities in the world. The UCR campus is located on 1,200 beautiful, park-like acres at the foot of the Box Spring Mountains and is home to 19,000 undergraduate and 2,500 graduate students, and 460 faculty members. UCR offers its students 89 undergraduate majors, nearly 53 master’s degree programs, 45 Ph.D. programs and 15 state teaching and administrative credentials in the University’s five colleges: Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, Natural & Agricultural Sciences, Engineering, the Graduate School of Management, and the Graduate School of Education. The UCR University Extension offers continuing education to the local community, as well as English instruction to thousands of international students each year. Outside of the classroom, students are actively involved in campus social and cultural life with nearly 200 student-run organizations available, including 21 national fraternities and sororities, several student newspapers, a campus radio station, and a diverse range of multicultural, religious, academic, recreational, and community service interest groups. Competing in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division 1 level, UCR is a member of the Big West Conference featuring 17 intercollegiate sports teams. Countless recreational and cultural events are available to students on-campus, including Wednesday “Nooner” band performances, film series, extensive multicultural festivals, and professional drama, music, and dance events.

  • Overview
  • The Intensive English Program offers 10-week sessions throughout the year. Intensive English helps students quickly improve their English for university admission, career goals, or intercultural communication skills.
    
    The Program offers 5 levels of English classes, from 300 (low intermediate) to 700 (advanced). In order to qualify for admissions, students must have the following minimum English proficiency score with the application or take an online assessment test to determine their English level:
    
    TOEFL iBT 37, TOEFL Paper 420, IELTS 4.0, iTEP Academic 2.7, Duolingo 70

  • From Los Angeles International Airport:
    The IEP provides airport pick-up service that costs $120 and brings students directly to the University campus. Students must request airport pick-up service 10 days prior to departing their home country. Taxis are also available at the airport. It will cost approximately US$120 and will arrive on-campus in 60 minutes.
    
    From Ontario International Airport:
    The IEP provides airport pick-up service that costs $70 and brings students directly to the University campus. Students must request airport pick-up service 10 days prior to departing their home country. Taxis are also available at the airport.     The school is good!!!!
    

    This was my first time studying abroad. UC Riverside's teachers are very good. I found that when I was there, there were quite a few Korean students. There are two different kinds of homestays that you can choose from, IRC and IV. I chose the IV homestay option. I enjoyed having the ability to cook there and I saved a lot of money. It was a very good experience for me.

    My American Life
    

    I was 38 years old when I went to America. Why I wanted to go to America is because my wife, she wanted to live overseas after she worked 5 years. I have to say it's a very good experience for me, it seems a 9 months dream, and I hoped I won't wake up! I want to say it, if you want to go to America, come to UCR, it's my choice, and I believe it would be your best choice, too!

    關於交通方面，如果學校能改進公車的優惠將會更好，畢竟遊學生沒有交通工具，出入學校以外的地方對學生來講是很好的課外教學。

    校內較多部分的人是亞洲人,也以韓國人居多..
    教職人員..也有部份是亞洲人,
    但我覺得裡面的教職員的確是很熱情也很有耐心..

    英語を集中して勉強したい人におすすめ
    

    私が参加したUCR Extension CenterのIntensive English Programは、英語基礎の基礎から学べるとても良い学校でした。先生達は皆熱心で、それぞれが授業を楽しくするように工夫していました。私のいた頃は日本人と韓国人の留学生が比較的多かったですが、中にはヨーロッパや南アメリカ、アフリカからの留学生もいたので、自分から英語で話せる友達を沢山作ることをおすすめします。教師予備生による夜のクラスや、放課後ボランティアのネイティブと英会話をできたりと、留学生にはとても役立つ無料のプログラムもあったので、自分の意欲次第ではとことん集中して英語を勉強できる環境だと思います。ただ学校がある場所は、都会の生活に慣れている人は不便に感じると思います。でも学校のすぐ傍にはスタバや映画館があるので、放課後友達と過ごしたりできます。郊外ならではの、静かで勉強に打ち込むにはもってこいの場所だと思います。
