Intensive English Program
- Overview
- Complete (C) and Brief (B) ESL courses sessions are offered during the academic year and summer. Fall C and Spring C are 14 weeks while Fall B and Spring B are 7- or 8-week length sessions. Summer C is 12 weeks, while Summer B is 6 weeks in length. Students are divided into courses of different difficulty levels for each linguistic skill on the basis of a comprehensive placement test. Full-time students receive at least 23 hours of classroom instruction per week; however students may take up to 32 hours to include elective and substitute classes.
Depending on the season of enrollment and the term length, there may be 4 to 10 levels of instruction. When enrollment permits, the ELI creates a comfortable learning environment by initially separating students according to their age. Students are then placed into different difficulty levels for each of the skills that they will study in the core courses (Listening/Speaking, Grammar, and Reading/Writing). Appropriate skill levels are determined by the results of a placement examination taken soon after arrival. Additionally, the ELI offers elective courses in standard test-taking skills such as the TOEFL, Business English, U.S. Culture, Pronunciation, Conversation Strategies, Computer Applications and other special courses that vary by term.
The Intensive English Program is designed to greatly improve students’ English abilities using the latest techniques made through research developments in the ESL field and making systematic use of the Cultural Immersion Program, which inserts students in the local community.
Classroom sizes average 12 students per class with a maximum of 15 students. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective language instruction and to offer individual attention. - Data

As with many of you, my experience with studying English was full of boring grammar rules. ELI not only gave me the opportunity to learn English through games, coffee talks, movies, and paintball (yes, paintball!), but also gave me the chance to communicate with others student from all over the world. Now I have friends in different continents and it gave me a reason to keep practicing my English. Also, as an ELI student you become part of UF and therefore part of the Gator Nation; and you know what they say: it’s !

It's impossible not to love a place where you can meet many good people from all over the world. It's a great way to learn English in the US. If you come to the ELI, you're going to enjoy and learn at the same time. It has been amazing being an ELI student during two semesters in a row. I haven't left Gainesville, and I already feel that I miss all those great friends, teachers, and people that I have met in this awesome place.
