  • Since 1972, IELI has created a supportive and engaging environment that promotes the development of linguistic and academic skills and intercultural competence necessary for international students, scholars and professionals to be successful in their academic pursuits at USU and become independent citizens and leaders in a constantly changing world. Students who finish the IELI program can go directly into their majors without taking the TOEFL or IELTS. Many students come here because Logan and the USU campus are often rated as among the safest in the country.
    
    IELI offers a pathway for international students who want to pursue a major at USU. When you finish the IELI program, you can go directly into your major without taking the TOEFL or IELTS exam. IELI classes prepare you to be successful in your studies; students who finish our program have an average GPA of 3.0 (B grade). Because the classes are credit bearing, you can apply IELI credits towards graduation.
    
    IELI is a place for international students, scholars, and professionals who want to improve their English. The experienced faculty and strong curriculum will ensure that your speaking, listening, reading, and writing ability will improve considerably. The small classes provide individual attention and the opportunity to use English in a variety of settings.

  • On behalf of the faculty and staff, I am pleased that you have are considering our program. We are a small program with highly qualified and experienced faculty. The Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) began in 1972 and since then we have been involved in many different international activities here at Utah State University (USU), in the U.S., and around the world. We offer a full academic 18 credit Intensive English program that successfully prepares students for their chosen majors at USU and other American universities (IELI graduates have an average GPA of 3.0!).

  • Housing
  • While attending Utah State University, students have the option to live in on-campus dormitories or off-campus residences. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students – both American and international. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as soon as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The school may provide information about private off-campus apartments; however, it is the students’ responsibility to make their own arrangements.

  • IELI is located in a beautiful mountain valley with four distinct seasons. It is a safe and quiet place, great for outdoor activities all year round. It’s easy to get around the valley thanks to its free public transportation on and off campus.

  • Utah State University is a medium size public university. It is a high research activity university and it boasts 9 colleges including Arts, Agriculture and Applied Science, Engineering, Science, Veterinary Medicine, Humanities and Social Sciences, Education and Human Services, Business, and Natural Resources. Some Majors that students can explore include Aerospace Studies, Social Work, Nursing, Economics and Finance, Wildland Resources, Biology, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Aviation Technology, and Music. It is also known for its award winning creamery, Aggie Ice Cream, which serves the best ice cream in the region.

  • Conditional admission for undergraduate and graduate programs is available for qualified students. IELI offers a pathway for international students who want to pursue a major at USU. When you finish the IELI program, you can go directly into your major without taking the TOEFL or IELTS exam.

  • Overview
  • Classes focus on language and cultural skills needed for successful university study. IELI has four levels of instruction. Each level takes one 15-week semester to complete. Classes meet 18 hours per week. Level 1 is high beginning. Students entering IELI must have a basic knowledge of English in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Some classes at levels 1 and 2 are multi-level. Students who place into Level 1 repeat these classes for additional credit upon advancing to Level 2. The content of the courses varies from term-to-term. Classes at all levels are credit bearing. Depending upon major department, undergraduate students may apply up to 36 IELI credits as elective credit towards graduation.
    
    Having an informed cross-cultural perspective will help students interact with IELI classmates from diverse cultures, and all members of the university community. IELI aims for a curriculum focused on learning and believe that all members of a classroom community learn from one another. The program strives for an open, supportive learning environment where students can explore individual interests, learn to make decisions, negotiate issues and take responsibility for their own learning.
