  • About the ESL Program
  • The Intensive English Program at Rice University is open to non-native speakers of English who have a serious desire to improve their language skills. Classes are small, with an average of 12 students, allowing participants a maximum amount of individual attention and an opportunity to develop conversational skills. Classes are offered at all levels, from beginning to advanced. Students from more than 125 countries have attended this program, which has been offered since 1978.

  • Welcome to the Rice University Intensive English Program. We have opened our doors to students from over 125 different countries over the past forty years. We are located in the heart of Houston, Texas, a vibrant multicultural city. Many of our students are preparing for graduate or undergraduate studies. Others already have professional degrees or are here just to improve their language skills. The best part about our program is that we attract interesting students from all parts of the world.   • Intensive English Program students are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. This should be done as early as possible. Moderately priced facilities are generally available. Although the program does not provide housing or make housing arrangements, students may contact the Intensive English Program for a list of housing suggestions.

  • With a metropolitan area population of over 7 million, Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States, located in the mild coastal climate near the Gulf of Mexico. A major international city, Houston boasts two international airports, museums, operas, festivals, theaters, concerts, professional sporting events, outstanding restaurants, shopping malls, the world’s largest medical center, the NASA Johnson Space Center and many other attractions. Galveston’s beaches, less than an hour away, afford many recreational opportunities. Rice University is located in the beautiful Museum District of central Houston, near the Texas Medical Center.

  • Intensive English classes are held on the campus of Rice University, a small, private university known for its academic excellence and the achievements of its faculty, graduates and students. Facilities of the University, including the library and recreation center, are available to Intensive English students, as are sports events, exhibitions, concerts, films and lectures.

  • Overview
  • The Intensive English Program’s course of study is based on an integrated-skills approach with listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar components. Fluency and accuracy in both spoken and written English are emphasized. The six-level core program helps students build practical English skills for general, academic or professional purposes. The Advanced Level is for students whose level of English proficiency is beyond the six-level core program. Courses at this level focus on diverse areas of interest.
