  • Founded in 1972, the American English Institute (AEI) is an intensive non-credit English program on the campus of California State University, Fresno. AEI has the two-fold mission of teaching English as a Second Language to international and domestic students and of training future educators from Fresno State’s Department of Linguistics. All classes are taught by well-qualified instructors.
    
    Class sizes are small, so students can interact closely with their peers, their teachers, the administrators, and the academic advisor. Because of its excellent teachers and diverse classes, students leave AEI with well-rounded English language skills, equipped to meet the demands of the academic world and beyond.

Our small classes are taught by highly trained instructors. You will be able to meet your goals whether you want to study at a U.S. college or university, such as California State University, Fresno, or simply want to improve your communication skills. Outside the classroom, you will have the opportunity to use all campus facilities, including music and theatre performances, group classes or intramural sports at the Student Recreation Center, and bowling and billiards in the University Student Union.   • Housing
  • AEI students have the option to live in on-campus dormitories or off-campus residences. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students – both American and international. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as soon as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The school may provide information about private off-campus apartments; however, it is the students’ responsibility to make their own arrangements.   • Surrounding Area
  • One of the main advantages to living in Fresno is its relatively low cost of living. There is safe, affordable housing near the Fresno State campus.
    
    Must-see sites in the city are the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, the Shinzen Japanese Garden, and Forestiere Underground Gardens. Woodward Park is a perfect place for biking and walking, for attending concerts and plays, and for having adventures on the San Joaquin River. Art lovers are sure to enjoy the diversity of the exhibits at the Fresno ArtHop or a visit to the Fresno Art Museum. Also, live theater abounds at such venues as Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theater and Second Space Theater.
    
    Fresno’s central location in California makes it relatively close to cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. For the nature lover, nearby national parks prove excellent diversions from studying. Students should not neglect visiting Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks.
    
  • About the College/University
  • The campus of Fresno State is encircled by the grape vines, cornfields, and almond trees that represent the University Farm. The sprawling main campus is comprised of 388 acres, which includes dormitories. Sculptures and other art grace the campus. The most salient sculptures are those found at the Peace Garden and the Armenian Genocide Memorial. Because the campus is designated as an arboretum, students can relish the beauty of the Rose and Iris Gardens and take a self-guided tour of the various trees and shrubs around campus.
    
    Students can find respite from their studies at numerous places on campus. The Student Union features bowling, billiards, and video games. Students can stay in shape by using the facilities at the Recreation Center or by taking yoga or one of the many other group classes that are available. Additionally, AEI students can receive free or discounted tickets to various Bulldog athletic events including football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball. Furthermore, music concerts and theater performances provide cultural enrichment.
    
    The Henry Madden Library is a favorite place to study for students. Starbucks Coffee, which is housed in the same building, offers another kind of support to keep students alert for long nights of study.
    
    The Fresno State Farm Market sells agricultural products that are produced by Fresno State students. Shoppers can fill their carts with ice cream, meat, produce, wine, raisins, chocolate-coved almonds, potted plants, and cut flowers.
    
    A short walk to the east from campus is Campus Pointe, a haven for students featuring the Maya Cinema and restaurants including the Mad Duck Craft Brewery and Pieology.
    
    The Save Mart Center adjacent to campus continually hosts events ranging from bull riding to rock concerts.

  • Overview
  • With an emphasis on academic English, the American English Institute (AEI)’s non-credit classes help prepare students for the language demands of college and university study. Students are placed in levels from low-intermediate to advanced based on the results of a standardized placement test and an essay. An Institutional TOEFL test and a post-session writing test are given to gauge progress. Certificates are awarded based on performance.
    
    Full-time students at the AEI take four core classes (writing, grammar, reading, and listening/speaking) and two mandatory electives, for a total of twenty hours of instruction per week Each core class meets four hours a week (two hours two days a week) with students attending two core classes a day. Students generally have afternoon classes two days a week and morning classes three days a week. Because they take their core courses with the same classmates, students get to know each other well. The two two-hour courses are mixed level. Students get to interact with classmates from other levels. With four core courses and two electives, students take classes from at least four and up to six different teachers. In this way, they get to know a number of different teachers with different teaching styles.
    
    Because AEI is university-based, the program strives to make interactions with university students a part of its program. Listening/Speaking classes often hold a “conversation hour” with university student conversation partners as part of its class times. Students from the university’s Recreation Administration Department often create programs for AEI students. Moreover, AEI often asks its students to represent the program at campus events.

    It was really good experience, the teachers are nice and they care about the students. The environment was great and there were a lot of useful activities in classes. In addition there were a lot of events for students.
