10-Week Intensive ESL Program
- Overview
- The 10-Week Intensive ESL Program is offered year-round. Students enrolled in the Program receive a minimum of 18 hours of classroom instruction per week.
The program offers seven levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. The core curriculum focuses on developing students’ skills in the areas of grammar and writing, reading and vocabulary, as well as speaking and listening. As part of the program’s curriculum, students are also offered a number of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their interests, including TOEFL/IELTS Preparation, Pronunciation, American Film, Vocabulary Building and Advanced Grammar. A TOEFL test preparation workshop is available each session for a nominal fee. Students at the advanced level have the option to take UCI courses as electives and are awarded regular college credit if they pass the class. Students who pass the courses in the 10-week Intensive ESL program receive Continuing Education credits, which are accepted by Continuing Education’s Professional Programs and by some community colleges.
Classroom sizes average 16 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.
**Part-Time Study Option**
If you are coming to the U.S. mainly for tourism, on a tourist visa (B-2) or visa waiver (WT), you may study any combination of the classes noted below, that equal 17 hours or fewer.

Success Through Academics and Research (STAR) Program
- Overview
- Undergraduate Success Through Academics and Research (USTAR):
Success Through Academics and Research (STAR) gives qualified students essential skills and acculturation opportunities to help them advance and succeed in their undergraduate education in the U.S. STAR will provide American & academic cultural seminars, academic English courses, pre-college courses, and research and critical thinking skills preparation for setting a strong foundation for academic success in students’ future college education. In addition, students who have demonstrated academic strengths and proficient English language skills during the program will receive the opportunity of enrolling in UCI credit-bearing courses to study with world-renowned professors and get a head start in college. STAR will also allow students to navigate college campus resources, explore their major and career options, and determine a right-fit university / college for their educational trajectory.

Graduate Success Through Academics and Research (GSTAR):
The Success Through Academics and Research (STAR) offers post-baccalaureate degree seekers a great learning environment for becoming competitive applicants to and successful students in high-ranking U.S. graduate programs. STAR offers two tracks of study: General and Specialized. Students will receive advanced academic, professional, research, and communication skills training through rigorous UCI credit-bearing courses or Accelerated Certificate Programs (ACPs). Moreover, students who have successfully earned an ACP certificate will be eligible to participate in a three-month internship to boost their resumes and interaction with business professionals in the U.S. STAR will help students become familiar with demanding graduate school culture at a top university, build a strong professional network, and set a right-fit educational path for reaching their goals.

It is very different form Asian campus. The weather is warm and dry and very nice. Near there is Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas and San Francisco. In vacation, you can go there easily. Location is good and the city is very safe. You can walk at night. There are many Asian supermarkets and restaurants around Irvine. You will not be homesick. But there are two weaknesses. There are too many Taiwanese and you need a car.

The activities we had were very engaging and they gave me a better glimpse of American life. Learning is not just in the classroom but also outside of classroom when you encounter real life learning experiences! I believe that people value education and the success of students highly; therefore, all the difficulties a foreign student can encounter seem more bearable and understandable once there is a supporting force, which is one of the most valuable things that this program can offer.

I took one quarter class of ESL for preparing better English conversation right before entering the Ph.D. Program in the same school. Everything in Irvine is quite good and Irvine is one of the safest cities in the U.S. Teachers are well qualified to teach English and also very kind. I surely could see their great passion to teach international students. Compared to other places, there are many Asian students (Korea, Taiwan, and Japan). I believe that you can have a great chance to improve your English and spend time with great friends from other countries in UC Irvine!!!

The teachers are nice, motivated and energetic, and always encouraged every student to learn and enjoy English. The school is beautiful and full of energy. Most of all, the weather is wonderful. When you have a picnic or outdoor event, you don't even need to wonder if it's rainy. It should be sunny!!! The California weather is God's gift. If you're looking for an ESL school where you enjoy your life in a relaxed environment as well as learn English, then I won't regret recommending UCI for you. It's the best!!!

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful.非常好的游学之地我大学毕业连续工作超过10年+，法律专业，在国企做法务主管，按部就班，职业似乎到了天花板。之所以选择游学，希望停下来确定一下未来的方向，去看看外边这个更大的世界，顺便给自己充充电，哪怕只是学学外语。 通过网站自助申请，我前后大概只用了2个多月就拿到了签证。尽管辞去了工作，但是我对自己的选择非常满意，我收获了更多，现在我拥有了新的工作，和全新的开始。 加州大学尔湾分校就在洛杉矶近郊，气候非常棒，治安是美国最好的区域之一。校园就像大公园，各种图书馆、体育中心、教室、商业等设施非常完善。最喜欢的是食蚁兽体育中心的游泳池和校内餐厅的墨西哥牛肉卷。学校针对国际学生有很多体育、赛事、旅游等服务，去看自然风光、棒球赛或者在运动场踢足球。无论你喜欢玩，还是喜欢学习，这里都太棒啦~ 我参加的是英文10周课程，课程共2个半月。这里英文一共7个等级，如果达到第6级，就可以申请参加学校的ACP课程（工商管理等商业相关课程），可以说这里不仅提供语言学习，只要英文过关，还有很多商务课程可以继续读。同学们来自不同国家，不同行业，无论是等待托福考试准备在美国就读的高中生，还是像我这样的职场老兵，大家都很享受这种注重听说、演讲等实用技巧的英文训练。我演讲两次最佳，收获了日本和台湾同学，真是人生宝贵经历。 我还在课程结束后和同学一起花了三周时间租车横穿美国，从洛杉矶到纽约，奇妙之旅~ 我将永远怀念这个学校，这段游学经历。

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful.商業英文課程以及學校環境我念的是學校商業英文的課程，上學第一天會舉行分班測驗，商業課程共有兩個班。一班約15-20人。不算小班制教學。班上同學有大學生也有畢業許久的上班族。我有一些同學是被公司派來這短期進修的。
雖名為商業課程，教的卻不是英文書信或者商用英文，而是美國股票或市場調查。即使跟我當初想得不太一樣，還是受獲非常多，讓我更了解美國市場。老師給的作業大多為閱讀(時事新聞報導)，因此自動自發的學生可以學比較多。我的toeic有850分，覺得上課內容有一定的難度，所以剛好跟我的程度相符。另外，班上很多人都沒有商科的背景，老師其實也了解，所以不會也不需害怕，可以下課後多問老師。我很喜歡UCI的老師。另外，如果想學"英文"，會建議去上10週intensive的課，據說每天都有很多作業要寫，上課內容也非常充實。
另外，關於住的部分，學校的宿舍好像有名額限制(homestay則隨時都有)，而且似乎多提供給長期(預計會待兩三個月以上)的學生。因此只念一個月的同學，我會建議您早點報名不然就是自己在校外找好房子。
最後提一下學校環境。UCI有為國際學生辦很多活動，幾乎每天都有活動可以參加。(有的需付費，有的則是免費的)但是對於不喜歡參加學校活動又沒有車的人來說，UCI這裡真的會蠻無聊的，因為公車很少(40分鐘-1小時1班)。如果朋友中沒有人開車，去LA,迪士尼或聖地牙哥有些不便。但是這邊真的街道乾淨、整體感覺非常安全。

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful.UCI Extension學校的公寓型宿舍可能不會是最好的住宿選擇，可以多比較選擇美國學校宿舍集團與學校合作的房子可能會比較恰當。另外IRVINE不是公共交通便利的城市，如選擇homestay要多考慮交通與距離。

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful.For UCI ESLESL老師很親切，雖然偶有幾位老師特別嚴格，但是也能學到較多。我有上到Mrs. Brown的speaking/listening的課程，深深覺得她是位很盡責的老師。課堂很多活動，需要準備的作業也相對較多，可是卻能讓我覺得獲益良多。
在UCI上ESL的日子真的很令我懷念，但是聽說UCI的ESL課業壓力較其他學校大且多，因為沒上過其他學校的，所以不知情，但是我上到的課，課後複習和作業的確都不少。也就是就算下了課，也還是得努力唸著英文，蠻充實的。

師資教材都很有一套系統，品質很有保障。
但也因為這裡最主要的交通工具是車子，
如果在這邊求學沒有車子的話，
就得依賴班次沒有很頻繁的公車了。
（大概一小時一班）
就學習英文來說，很推薦這邊的學習環境。
但就課外與社交活動，倒不是那麼多采多姿。

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.홈스테이학교 수업의 질 및 환경은 너무 좋았습니다. 선생님들도 친절하고 진지하게 수업에 임해주시고 캠퍼스 분위기도 너무 좋습니다. 공부하기 좋은 분위기입니다.
다만 제 개인적으로는 학교 WISE에서 연계해주는 홈스테이및 공항에서의 픽업서비스에 매우 불만족합니다. 홈스테이 주인이 너무 엄격해서 미국 온 처음 이주일은 너무 힘들었습니다. 그래서 가까스로 집을 구해 옮기게 되었습니다. 픽업 서비스 역시 전 받지 못하고 비용만 지불했습니다. 픽업서비스 기사의 말만 듣고 일처리를 하는 바람에 그렇게 되었습니다. 픽업 기사분이 거짓말을 하신건지 아니면 진짜로 듣지 못하신건지 모르겠지만, 전 LA공항에서 이곳 얼바인까지 한밤중에 정말 고생스럽게 찾아왔습니다.
어학연수 및 수업에 관한 부분은 학교를 전적으로 믿으셔도 될거 같습니다. 다만 생활하는 부분은 충분히 정보를 알아보셔서 저처럼 고생하지 않으셨음 합니다.

수업의 내용이나, 교제의 진행속도
수업을 이해하기에도 크게 무리가 없네요.
숙제가 매일있고, 일주일에 한번씩 스피치 발표수업이 있어
항상 긴장감속에 있기때문에, 스스로 공부하는 시간도 많습니다.
야외활동도 학교 주변의 유명한 곳을 방문함으로써 수업시간의 공부 이외에 미국사람들을 접할 기회도 갖을수 있어서 좋습니다.
저의 전체적인 평가는 만족입니다.

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful.학교 스태프들의 태도학교 선생님들은 무척 친절한 편이다. 저번 쿼터에 한 선생님만 빼고 나머지 7명의 교사들은 매우 열정적이며 친절해서 존경하는 교사도 있다. 하지만 오피스 프론트데스크 스태프는 파트타임이라서 그런지 학생들이 물어보면 엉뚱하게 알려주거나, 또한 전혀 지식이 없거나 하는 경우가 많았다. 학교 측에서 스탭이라고 앉혀놓은 사람들인데, 철저하게 교육시키고 나서 앉히는게 올바른 순서 인것같다.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful.UC Irvine 수업우선 엄격한 학사관리가 만족스러웠다. 어학연수의 경우 자기 관리가 안 되는 경우 시간을 낭비하기 쉬운데, 일정 시간 이상 결석을 하면 경고가 주어지는 등 나름대로 엄격한 규칙이 있는 점이 마음에 들었다. 각 수업 특성에 맞게 주어지는 다양한 과제물 또한 좋았다. 특히 writing 과제와 개인 프리젠테이션이 많은 도움이 되었다. 과제에 대한 선생님의 feedback으로 부족한 점을 파악할 수 있었던 점도 만족스러웠다.

처음엔 정말 어떻게 할지 몰랐고 영어 초보자로서 언어에 있어서도 많이 걱정했는데 등록과 수속에 있어서는 스태프들이 저의 영어 실력을 감안하여 끝까지 들어주고 직접 집까지 안내 해주면서 쉽게 생활 할 수 있었고, 커리큘럼도 정말 영어공부에 집중할수 있도록 선생님들도 친절하고, 여러가지 활동으로 저의 영어 실력에 많은 도움이 되었습니다. 정말 추천하고 싶은 학교에요!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.캘리포니아의 진면목을 느끼고 싶다면..얼바인은 최근에 들어 중고등학교 자녀를 둔 학부모를 중심으로 교육도시, 살기 좋은 도시로 알려지고 있다. 이에 걸맞게 UC Irvine은 새롭게 떠오르고 있는 명문으로 발돋움 하고 있으며, 실제 학교에 가보아도 신축 건물 공사가 한창이고, 교수진의 확충 또한 가장 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 교육과 휴양.. 언뜻보면 어울리지 않는 이 두 단어가 가장 멋들어지게 조화되고 있는 곳이 UC Irvine이라고 할 수 있다.

先生や学校スタッフの方もとても優しく、私のつたない英語にも親切に接してくださいました。
I had a great time at UCI. Everyone, staff, teacher are very kind even my English was so poor.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful.10-Week Intensive ESL Program私は留学前、TOEICでは600点前後の者です。10-Week Intensive ESL Programを１quarter受けました。7レベルにある中でクラス分けの結果、上から３番目のクラスでした。クラスは１クラス約16,7名でした。授業内容、教師陣に関しては大変満足しております。毎日宿題がでて、それをこなすのが結構大変でした。完璧に宿題をこなすと自由に使える時間はかなり限られるのではないかと思います。正にinsentiveといった印象で、英語の勉強はしっかりできるのではないでしょうか。ただ、考慮すべき点は、アーバインは日本のように交通の便がよくない事です。私の場合、学生寮が学校から遠方で近くにスーパーもなく不便な思いをしました。車を利用される予定のない方は滞在先を熟慮された方がよいと思います。

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful.4 week business classTOEIC500点が目安とありましたが、720点ある私でも相当ハイレベルでキャッチアップするのが大変でした。900点くらいはあった方がよいと思います。ビジネスクラスは宿題も多く、週末もあまりのんびりできませんが、大変やりがいがありました。またクラスメンバーが4週間変わらないので、とても仲良くなれた点もよかったです。
学校のドミトリを利用しましたが、ホームステイよりも近いこと、他国の生徒と交流が持てることからこちらをお勧めします。但し4人で1つの部屋を共有するので、プライバシーを重んじる人はホームステイの方がよいと思います。
全般的には学校施設、教師の質の高さからお勧めできる学校です。

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful.UC Irvine のESL私は海外で旅行関係の仕事経験がありましたが、更なる英語力のブラッシュアップのために4週間のESLプログラムに参加しました。UC IrvineのESL4週間プログラムは3つのレベルでクラス分けをしており、開講初日のプレイスメントテストで私は真ん中レベルのクラスに入りました。クラスの受講生の国籍は、日本、台湾、韓国、チリ。毎日のカリキュラムは、Reading、Idions & Vocabulary、Speaking & Listeningの3レッスンで、週に2日午後に選択受講のクラスをとっていました。講師は海外での教務経験があったり、大学で研究をしている等、質が高く、授業も分かり易く、日本の英会話スクールとは違った学生主導のレッスン内容で中身が濃かったです。毎日writingなどの宿題がしっかり出るのと、Speaking & Listeningと選択したアメリカ文化のクラスでスピーチの課題があり、図書館で調べ物をしたりといった必要もあって有意義でした。ESLの講師の方が「教師は生徒をサポートするためにいるもので、クラスはいつも学生主導であるべきだ」という話をされていたことがありました。講師はトピックを提示し、学生はそれについて自由に考え意見を交換し、講師はそのフィードバックをする。私はこの授業のスタイルにすっかり感化され、それまでまったく自分とは縁のないものだと思っていた教師という仕事に興味を持つようになりました。帰国後すぐに採用試験を受け、現在は子供英会話の講師の仕事をしています。短期でしたが留学をして本当に良かったです。採用試験ではインタビューで力を発揮できたことと、readingのクラスで毎日のようにエッセーを書く課題をこなしていたことがとても役に立ちました。またいつか、スキルアップのために留学する機会を持ちたいと思いながら日々の仕事に奮闘しています。

果たしてどこの学校が自分に合っているのか悩みますよね。
ESL終了後に大学に進みたい方にはUCIrvineはお勧め。
大学入学前にエッセイを義務付けられてる今、UCIrvineはSpeaking&Listening,Reading,Grammar&Writingと
各パート毎にクラスが分かれており、特にWritinigでは
作文とは全く異なるアメリカでの文章の書き方が
基礎から学べます。是非皆さんへお勧めしたいです。

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful.アメリカ留学UCIのExtensionのESLに通っていました。ここの学校は宿題やテストが多いことで有名な語学学校だったのでかなりハードな毎日でした。けど、この半年間でかなりの英語力がついたと思います。
もし、１日でも時間を無駄にしたくなかったらここの学校は是非お勧めです。

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful.やはり大学自分が参加した1か月の一般英語コースは2クラスの編成で、試験結果に基づいて上か下に分けられました。5レベルぐらいあれば、基礎クラスに相当するクラスもできるのだろうと想像していましたが、そうはいきませんでした。授業についていくのも、毎日の宿題をこなすのも必死でした。
でも、やはりオンキャンパスということもあり、ブックストアに行って買い物をしたり、食堂に行って食事を楽しんだり、アメリカのキャンパスライフを体験することができました。車で10分走ればコスタメサの日系スーパーなどがあり、生活も快適でした。
快適なキャンパスと、質の高い授業で、かなり英語力がある人にお勧めします。自分のように、基礎的な英語を勉強をしようとしている人には少々つらいものがあるかもしれません。

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful.１０週間と４週間のプログラムの違い（両方とりました）１０週間のプロがラムと４週間のプログラムがありますが、真剣に語学力を向上したいのであれば、１０週間集中プログラムをおすすめします。語学力よりも自由時間と考えているのならば、４週間をとること考えてもいいと思います。国籍は、時期によってかなり変わりますが、私がいた時は韓国、日本、台湾が多かったです。気後れするかもしれませんが、日本人のクラスメートにも英語で話すようにしましょう。教師陣の質はかなり高いと思います。

Una Experiencia InigualableYo estuve estudiando un curso de 8 semanas de inglés para business y la verdad es que adquirí conocimientos muy buenos en bolsa y en marketing que me han servido para a día de hoy poder trabajar en la primera consultara europea.
Además me sirvió para poder adquirir una puntuación de ITP TOEFL de forma gratuita ya que el exámen estaba incluido en el curso y de esta manera pudo obtener una calificación que me ha servido para probar mis conocimientos de inglés en varias empresas.
La verdad es que ha sido el curso más bonito de toda mi vida, tanto que incluso puede que lo repita algún verano más.
