Intensive English Program
- Overview
- The Intensive English Program offers five 8-week sessions throughout the year. Students enrolled in the program receive 22 hours of classroom instruction each week.
The program offers 7 levels of English classes - from Basic (Level 10) to University Bridge (Level 80) - depending on the session’s student enrollment and need. At the beginning of orientation, students take written and oral examinations to help determine the level best-suited to their ability.
The program focuses on developing students’ skills in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking, in addition to grammar and pronunciation, throughout all levels of instruction. Students studying at the Basic level focus on developing their survival English skills - including basic reading and writing - in order to achieve communicative competence and develop conversational ease. Intermediate-level students study from the program’s balanced curriculum to develop proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing; Advanced-level students build the academic skills essential to enter a degree program in a US university. In addition to studying from a rigorous curriculum designed to hone their academic skills, these students also attend a 3-unit university course in order to gain hands-on experience in a U.S. university classroom.
Academically-qualified students may apply to the University of Arizona and receive Conditional Admission pending their completion of the university’s English language TOEFL requirement. CESL students who meet the CESL criteria may request a CESL endorsement in place of the required TOEFL score.
Class sizes generally range from 16 to 18 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. - Data

I thought that learning English would require more and more practice, including lots of conversation practice. CESL offers this to students and the diversity of courses you need. Actually, before I came to CESL, I was not motivated to study English because I did not know how to read an article or completely understand what a certain passage was talking about, but now I am able to understand what the teacher and my classmates say. The most important thing is that I can say that I love English!

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful.I love CESL一直現在還很懷念在CESL上課的那段日子,對我來說是很特別的經驗. (Rec Center, Library...)

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful.
