- About the ESL School
- Established in 1975, the Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP) is one of the top institutions in the U.S. dedicated to helping students and professionals improve their English and understand American culture.
CELOP offers a wide variety of programs ranging from intensive and part-time English for academic purposes, to MBA and LLM preparatory programs, to high school and university-entry programs.
The CELOP student body includes aspiring university students, high school students, and professionals, and represented 50 countries in 2017. CELOP students have achieved success in a wide range of fields and have included researchers, CEO’s, diplomats, military leaders, and entertainment stars. - CELOP students are guaranteed on-campus housing for any full-time, semester-long program (12 or 16 weeks) and any summer semester program (end of May to middle of August). Students apply for housing as part of the application process and can live in dormitories with other BU students.
Off-campus housing is available in apartments and with host families in homestays. BU does not arrange off-campus housing, but a list of providers is on our website. - Surrounding Area
- CELOP is located in the heart of Boston on the Boston University Charles River Campus, the primary campus for the University. CELOP students study in a city setting surrounded by a vibrant, international community with more than 50 colleges and universities, championship sports teams, restaurants serving food from all over the globe, and world-class museums, shopping, and entertainment. Students can tour nearby universities, experience a Boston Celtics basketball or Red Sox baseball game, attend a performance at the Boston Ballet, shop at Newbury Street, or relax in the Public Garden.
CELOP is accessible by the free BU Shuttle Bus and is located next to two public subway lines that connect BU with the rest of Boston. Boston is the largest city in New England located a drive or bus ride from exploring New York City, hiking in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, and skiing in Vermont, all of which are common weekend trips for our students. - About the College/University

Intensive 12-Week Program: 25 Hours
- Overview
- The Intensive 12-Week Program: 25 Hours operates on a semester system and offers two 12-week sessions per year beginning in September and January. Students enrolled in the Program receive 25 hours of English language instruction per week.
The Program offers 8 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. Students attending the Program are required to study a particular area of the English language by selecting a concentration. Students' chosen concentrations are approved after they arrive at CELOP and take an English assessment test to help determine their ability level. Beginning to Intermediate-level students are placed in the Foundations in English concentration to help improve students' English listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary skills. Students with high-intermediate or above English language skills can select a concentration to study English Language and Culture, English for Academic Purposes, International Business English, or English for Science and Technology. The Super-Intensive Program is only offered during the September and January semesters. For summer Intensive courses, please refer to CELOP’s Intensive Program.
While attending the Intensive Program, students receive 15 hours per week of daily class instruction within their concentration, in addition to 5 hours in each two additional elective classes and unlimited independent access to CELOP's learning resources. CELOP offers a wide assortment of elective classes, allowing students to study areas such as TOEFL Preparation, Legal English, Business Communication, English Pronunciation/Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing, and American Culture through Movies.
Class sizes generally range from 12 to 15 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. - Data

Intensive 12-Week Program: 20 Hours
- Overview
- The Intensive 12-Week Program: 20 Hours operates on a semester system and offers two 12-week sessions per year beginning in September and January. Intensive Program classes are also available to students in 12-, 9-, 6- and 4-week sessions during the summer. Students receive 20 hours of English language instruction per week.
The Program offers 8 levels of English classes, from beginning to advanced. CELOP offers a wide variety of elective classes, allowing students to study areas such as TOEFL Preparation, Legal English, Business Communication, English Pronunciation/Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing, and American Culture through Movies.

- From Logan International Airport:
It is the student’s responsibility to arrange transportation from the airport to campus. Taxis are available from the airport that will cost approximately US$30-40 and arrive on campus in approximately 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. Logan Airport also permits travelers to request cars from ride sharing services Uber and Lyft. Public transportation is available with more limited schedules through a combination of the Silver Line Bus and subway lines with a travel time of approximately one hour.

The reason why I could study here is because of my time and experience at CELOP. The last semester that I took was the Pre-MBA course. This class focused on how to read cases and prepare for business school classes. I think CELOP helped me get used to how to survive in class discussions.

My instructors were great and taught me a lot both inside and outside classroom. I also had a conversation partner who was very helpful in improving my English. I loved the FitRec gym, it looked great and it was free! I also participated in a lot of activities such as ski trips, theater performances and basketball games. I never felt bored while studying at CELOP. I'm currently working as a director in an educational company which helps students to improve their English. My experience at CELOP really helped me learn more about American culture and schools which has allowed me to succeed in my current position.

I have been spent a great time with my teachers and classmates and they all taught me a lot of things. One teacher invited me and my family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his home with his family. It was awesome! We had a good experience and received information about American culture. After CELOP, I am going to enter a university. CELOP Has Strong EducatorsWhen I started at CELOP I was reading and writing at a beginner level of English. During this time I was also learning how to adapt to the American culture. The CELOP faculty provided me with a support system to help with my everyday struggles of learning in a whole new setting and environment. CELOP has strong educators that are willing to help you every step of the way. Try and push yourself to interact with others who you may not normally communicate with. Learning English is one aspect of the program, but you will learn that this program will help develop future relationships that are everlasting. Now, I am proud to say I have recently graduated with a Master's degree in business from Boston University.

I met a lot of great friends from all over the world and that how CELOP works, they bring everyone together. I had been taught by some great teachers whom I still remember now. Without CELOP, I wouldn't be able to enter a university and finish my studies. My second goal was to get a job after I finished my studies and that's exactly what I did. I would encourage you to take advantage of all the activities that CELOP offers because that is how you can learn English. CELOP is a place of seriousness, fun, joy, and hard-work all combined together and that is what makes it unique among all other English Institutions in Boston.

Successful on TOEFLCELOP helped me to become a lot more confident with the English language. My time at CELOP was really hectic because of the numerous homework and my need of dedicating time to my musical instrument daily. It was a difficult beginning of my studies in the US but I knew I had to deal with that for the better. While at CELOP I gained the necessary skills to be successful on the TOEFL. I acquired a lot of new vocabulary that helped me in the different sections of the Test. My teachers were constantly willing to help and did even extra hours when I needed them outside of the classroom. I am very glad that I decided to attend CELOP for one semester. Best Immersive ExperienceCELOP provided me the best immersive experience I could ever have. The classes were fun and all the professors I had made me feel very comfortable when speaking in English. Besides the professional experience, I made very good friends from different parts of the world. I will never forget the great professors I had and fun we had together. CELOP was a bridge to university and just the beginning of my career. Within only few months, I was accepted by Boston University. I am very proud to say I was part of CELOP's family and I'll really miss the classes. Use everything CELOP provides for you. There are different conversation clubs, events, trips and things to do among the other students. Get immersed into the U.S. culture. It will be very fun to make friends from different parts of the world. Boston is an amazing city and one of the best destinations of the world to grow.

I had a very pleasant experience at CELOP. I made really good friends and learned a lot. The teachers are really good and the teaching system is excellent. I was able to become fluent, and improve my grammar and vocabulary. CELOP helped with my universities application, and guided me with the TOEFL preparation.
CELOP provides the best education, comfort, and facilities, especially because we're allowed to use BU's facilities. I would suggest to take advantage of everything that CELOP offers.

Very Exciting!At CELOP, I was immersed in a group of students from all over the world. It was very exciting and enriching. My teachers helped me discover the potential that I had for learning and improving my English. The staff members made me feel comfortable and welcome.
The curriculum at CELOP enabled me to improve my TOEFL and IELTS English language proficiency tests. As a result, I have been accepted to a postdoctoral program.

I was satisfied with Boston University in that there were very good programs and the location of the school was Boston, a very historical city with many famous universities including Harvard and MIT.

可以使用到所有BU的學校設施之外，CELOP有academic adviser 專門協助學生詢問申請學校的問題。師資部分也很好，老師們每週都會固定開會，瞭解所有學生的狀況。學生之間素質也很齊，蠻多同學其實已經是BU的學生，在這裡加強語言能力；或者是拿到temporary admission, 在這裡把英文能力build up起來後，返回開始課業。所以在這裡可以打聽到不少美國求學的訊息。唯一不好的是，亞洲人很多，台灣與內地的人不少，所以要記得和不同國家的人多chat，才不會在這裡都講中文。
我目前還會再留一期以繼續準備申請學校。經驗分享給大家參考。

個々のレベルに合わせてクラスも設定され、初めの1週間で様子を見て、レベルを変えることも可能です。また学生証が発行され、大学施設はもちろん、周辺のボストン美術館に無料で入れたり、ボストンシンフォニーでもディスカウントされたりと学外でのメリットも大きいです。
ただ、夏以外は日本人が比較的多く感じました。
