- About the ESL Program
- Established in 1964, the English Language Institute (ELI) in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh provides language and cultural studies to students interested in improving their English ability for academic, professional, or personal success. The ELI offers an intensive English program (IEP), as well as language support courses, and short summer programs.
The ELI believes students learn English faster when they are actively using the language. For this reason, a special activities coordinator organizes weekly events such as picnics, parties, skiing, ice skating, sightseeing tours, movies, conversation hours, and trips to other cities. In addition, ELI students are part of the University of Pittsburgh and can join student organizations on campus, participate in student activities sponsored by the University, and access all recreational facilities, fitness center, and libraries on campus.
The ELI’s Intensive English Program is fully accredited by the CEA (The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation), meeting the highest standards of excellence for English language programs around the world. In addition, the ELI is a proud member of UCIEP (University and College Intensive English Programs), an independent consortium of university and college-administered intensive English Programs in the United States, and EnglishUSA (The American Association of Intensive English Programs) which promotes professional standards and quality instruction in intensive English programs. - Fast Facts

Intensive English Program
- Overview
- The Intensive English Program offers three 13-week sessions throughout the year, beginning in early September, early January, and early May. Students enrolled in the Program receive 20 hours of intensive in-class instruction per week.
The University of Pittsburgh English Language Institute does not have classes for beginners. The Program offers 5 levels of English classes, from high beginning to advanced. (High-beginning is approximately equivalent to 24 on the internet-based TOEFL.) All applicants take a pre-arrival entrance exam to determine their placement in the Program.
The Program's curriculum focuses on developing students' language skills for academic, professional, and personal success. Students develop their skills in classes that focus on speaking (fluency, pronunciation and giving presentations), listening (understanding lectures; conversational English; radio, TV, and other broadcasts), writing (organization, accuracy and composing essays), reading (developing vocabulary and fluency, improving comprehension), and English grammar. An optional TOEFL preparation course is occasionally offered and is available to all students. In the summer, a 6-week Professional and Academic English Course is offered for graduate and professional students, and a 4-week US Law and Legal English program is offered for law students from around the world. Students are encouraged to independently develop their English skills outside of class by using the Program's modern multi-media center including state-of-the-art audio-visual and computer technology.
The ELI believes that students learn English faster when they are actively using the language. A special activities coordinator organizes weekly social and cultural activities, such as picnics, parties, skiing, ice skating, sightseeing tours, movies, and trips to other cities. A special community outreach coordinator organizes weekly conversation partners and small conversation groups, and can provide information about volunteer opportunities as well. Furthermore, ELI students are part of the University of Pittsburgh community and can join one of the more than 500 student organizations and clubs, and use recreational/sports facilities, computer labs and libraries on campus. ELI students also have access to free and discounted cultural activities throughout the city.
Class sizes average from 12 to 18 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. - Data

We had a lot of activities, for example going to movies, going to museums, eating Mexican wings, volunteering and travelling. Teachers and staff were very kind and their teaching methods were excellant. It was a little bit hard because we had to do a lot of homework. But we absolutely improved our English skills.
I think Pittsburgh is one of the safest places in the United States. People are also kind. You will be satisfied studying in Pittsburgh.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful.
