- About the ESL Program
- The Minnesota English Language Program (MELP), which was founded in 1968, provides courses in English as a second language (ESL) at the University of Minnesota. The ESL coursework helps non-native English speakers improve English reading, writing, and speaking skills for success in a university classroom or in the workplace. Intensive English courses provide language skills development with experiential learning outside the classroom and effective use of technology in class to help students achieve academic, professional, or personal goals. MELP offers full-time classes at 4 levels from high-beginning to high-advanced. The curriculum of the program focuses on rigorous and academically focused classes taught by friendly and highly skilled teachers. Small class sizes are emphasized and students enrolled in MELP have access to many resources and facilities at the University of Minnesota. Advising and support services specifically designed for international students are also available.

- Welcome to the University of Minnesota! The Minnesota English Language Program (MELP) at the University of Minnesota is located in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. For more than 50 years we have welcomed students who want to improve their English skills for academic or professional purposes. The University of Minnesota has a beautiful campus located in a safe, urban environment. While studying here, students enjoy the many cultural opportunities within the Twin Cities including theaters, professional sports events, shopping at the Mall of America, and the many parks and lakes nearby. Our experienced, friendly, and caring instructors will work with you to help you achieve your learning goals and support you in adjusting to studying in English at a university. All of our classes are on campus where you will have opportunities to meet other university students and also use the libraries, recreation center, computer labs, and much more. - While attending the school, students have the option to live in on-campus dormitories or off-campus residences. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students – both American and international. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements early in order to have the best selection. The school can provide information about off-campus housing in the area. - The University of Minnesota’s English Language Program (MELP) is located on an urban campus in the attractive city of Minneapolis. Minneapolis and its adjacent city of St. Paul, form the core of the metropolitan area known as the Twin Cities. As the largest city in Minnesota, Minneapolis is home to over 400,000 residents and sits along the banks of the Mississippi River. The city is abundantly rich in water, with twenty lakes and wetlands, creeks and waterfalls. The actual city name of Minneapolis comes from a native American term for water (mni) and the Greek term for city (polis). Minneapolis is the primary business center between Chicago and Seattle and considered a global city with its increasing influence on the global economy. It has received accolades for being an enjoyable and clean city with a great transportation system and network of bike trails. Minneapolis offers all the sophistication visitors expect from an urban environment, paired with a lush, natural environment. The city invites its residents to take in an outdoor music festival, explore ancient gallery artifacts, dine at one of many sidewalk cafes, or, during the winter, go ice skating on one of the its 22 lakes.

- The University of Minnesota is a public research university located in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. The school has the sixth-largest main campus student body in the United States, with over 32,000 undergraduate students and over 16,000 graduate and professional students. With 6,100 international students from 142 countries it is a welcoming place for those students coming from overseas. Minneapolis is famous for being one of the safest metropolitan areas in the United States and safety and security are one of the University of Minnesota’s top priorities. The school is the second-largest institution of higher education in the Midwest by enrollment and the university offers more than 135 undergraduate degree programs and graduate degrees in over 150 fields. The University of Minnesota was recently ranked 30th out of more than 1000 international institutions recognized by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and is considered a “Public Ivy”, which recognizes top public research universities in the United States. Students attending MELP can access state-of-the-art recreation and wellness centers and can live in a vibrant, urban area with more than 10,000 trees, miles of bike paths, and the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area right in the heart of campus.

- Conditional Admission to the university is available for qualified students. Qualified students in the higher levels of the program can take a credit course as an elective in spring or fall.

Intensive English Program (IEP)
- Overview
- The Intensive English Program offers rigorous English courses three times a year to students from beginner to high-advanced language skill levels. In most levels, students have 25 hours of English instruction per week. Students can apply for sessions in the spring, summer and fall throughout the year. Sessions in the spring and fall run for 15 weeks and the summer session is 7 weeks long. All students will take a placement test upon arrival at the school and attend a new student orientation session. The Intensive English program curriculum is comprised of classes in subjects such as grammar, reading & composition and oral skills. The program provides opportunities for students to participate in field trips which help them develop listening and speaking skills by interacting with each other and people in the community. As students move to the advanced and high-advanced levels, they can take courses in areas such as academic skills and American culture.

It is the student’s responsibility to arrange travel arrangements from the airport to campus. Students can take taxis that cost approximately US$ 40 and arrive on campus in 30 minutes. The campus is also accessible by buses that run on a limited schedule.
