  • About the ESL Program
  • The English Language Program (ELP) at Kansas State University began helping students achieve academic and personal success in 1986. As part of the Office of International Programs, the ELP works closely with other parts of the university community to support students from around the world. ELP classes carry university credit and are approved by the K-State Faculty Senate. ELP students are K-State students with access to all university services and facilities.
    
    The ELP offers five levels of intensive English courses:
    • Beginning English 1
    • Beginning English 2
    • Intermediate English 1
    • Intermediate English 2
    • Advanced English (exit level)
    
    Full-time students take 18-19 hours of classes:
    • Reading / Vocabulary (6 hours)
    • Grammar / Writing (6 hours)
    • Speaking / Pronunciation (3 hours)
    • Listening / Notetaking (3 hours)
    • Orientation (1 hour)
    
    The ELP has a highly experienced faculty and staff. Instructors all have graduate degrees in teaching English and most of the faculty have lived abroad. The faculty and staff support students with:
    • Engaging classes with excellent teaching with in-person and online options
    • Free online and in-person English testing
    • Free tutoring
    • Advising on academic, social, and personal issues, with referral to campus offices as needed
    • Help in transitioning into academic degree programs

  • Greetings from Manhattan, Kansas! I have worked at Kansas State University for 15 years. Let me share with you why you will love it here.

    We have a beautiful campus with clean air, stately buildings, trees and flowers. Manhattan is a safe, small university town with strong relationships with the campus.
    
    You will receive excellent teaching in your English and academic classes. The ELP has been accredited by the Commission for English Language Program Accreditation since 2008. You will get an education that will set you up for success at K-State, whether your focus is English or a degree.

  • Housing
  • While attending Kansas State University, students have the option to live in on-campus dormitories, on-campus apartments, or off-campus residences. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students – both American and international. Freshmen students younger than 21 years old must live their first year on-campus.
    
    For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment.
    
    Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as soon as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The school may provide information about private off-campus apartments; however, it is the students’ responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, contact the Housing and Dining Office for options.

  • Manhattan, Kansas is located in the middle of the United States among the scenic Flint Hills. Just outside of Manhattan, the Konza Prairie is the last tall grass prairie reserve in the U.S. There are a number of hiking, running and biking trails in the area.
    
    The city has a population of 50,000 and is about a one-hour drive from the state capital, Topeka, and a two-hour drive from Kansas City. The town boasts clean air, beautiful landscapes with flowers and trees, and a variety of animal wildlife. Manhattan experiences all four seasons with the summer climate being the warmest with temperatures ranging from 20C - 33C. The winter average temperature ranges between –6C and 14C. Fall and spring temperatures in Manhattan are mild and range from 7C – 21C.
    
    The city has a safe, friendly atmosphere and hosts an amazing number of activities and events through the Parks and Recreation Center, including a Community Theater, a free summer concert series in the park (within walking distance from campus), several large shopping centers and numerous opportunities for tennis, swimming, golf, and walking. The campus and city bus system offers free transportation for students. People are open, helpful, and friendly. Several organizations offer opportunities for interaction between students and community members.

  • Conditional Admission / Credit Courses
  • Undergraduates are admitted based on their academic records. They do not need to show English proficiency to be admitted but must do so to begin taking classes.
    
    The Graduate Pathway program is the way in which students can be admitted with English test scores lower than those for full admission. Students wanting to pursue a graduate degree but not qualifying for the Pathway Program can enroll as an English Language Program student and then apply to the Graduate program as they enter their last semester of English.
    
    Students studying online can do so as an English language student or as a student admitted to an undergraduate online degree or certificate program.

  • Faculty Qualifications
  • English Language Program instructors are trained, skilled professionals. The instructors are native speakers of English or have native-like English proficiency. They have extensive experience teaching English to students from around the world and have also been second language learners themselves. The personal and academic qualities of the instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
    
• Study Options

  • Intensive English, K-State Fast, Graduate Pathway Programs, and the English for Academic Purposes Certificate

  • Overview
  • Intensive English students have 18-19 hours of class every week. Students have orientation classes, opportunities for social activities and field trips through the International Student center, and free tutoring. ELP students are K-State students and can use and enjoy all of the university facilities.
    
    K-State Fast students are admitted as undergraduate degree students. They may take anywhere from 4 - 19 hours of English. Those that qualify can take a combination of English and academic classes at the same time. Depending on the college, students can use anywhere from 6 - 27 credits toward a bachelor's degree. The ELP advising staff help students to move into their academic major.
    
    Students in the Graduate Pathway program take 3 or 6 hours of English per week along with 3-6 hours of classes in their graduate major. The Pathway Program allows students to begin graduate work with English scores below the admission requirement. The Pathway Program is one semester long. Upon successfully completing the Pathway Program, the student has full admission to their graduate program.
    
    The Certificate of Proficiency in English for Academic Purposes is a way that degree and non-degree students can provide evidence of their English abilities to employers and professional contacts. Students who meet the admission requirements can complete the work for the certificate on campus or online. The certificate is an official undergraduate certificate from Kansas State University.
    
    Students can take English as degree seeking or non-degree students on campus or online through Global Campus.

  • Getting To Your School
  • From Manhattan Regional Airport:
    KSU strongly suggests flying into the Manhattan Regional Airport (MHK), located only minutes away from campus. KSU provides a free shuttle for arriving students from the airport to campus Wednesday through Friday of arrival week. It takes students to campus only. Please email international@k-state.edu if you are interested in this service.
    From Kansas City International Airport:
    The Kansas City International Airport is a much larger airport than the Manhattan Regional Airport. This option may offer greater flexibility and more arrival options. However, Kansas City is more than 200 km (130 mi) from campus and KSU does not have a pickup service available for students arriving at this airport. Transportation options from Kansas City to Manhattan will be expensive.
