  • About the ESL Program
  • Western Carolina University's Intensive English Program (IEP) is designed for non-native English speakers to improve their language skills. IEP is useful for both working professionals and students preparing for university study or professional programs. Small class sizes provide individualized attention from experienced faculty who hold graduate degrees in linguistics or language teaching. Students improve their language skills outside of the classroom through immersive cultural experiences. IEP offers three levels of English study: high beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each level includes instruction and strategies in reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and additional special topics such as academic research, Business English, Intercultural Communication and iBT test preparation. Students receive 18 hours of in-class language instruction Monday through Friday with many cross-cultural activities throughout the semester.

  • Hello and welcome to our Intensive English Program! Our program was founded in 2010 and has included students from all over the world. Our instructors are some of the very best you will find and have extensive training and experience working with international students. We want you to feel at home with us, to study hard and make progress, and to stay in touch with us as you move into your university courses. We are your anchor from your first days here throughout your studies. In fact, most students successfully complete our program and obtain conditional admission to Western Carolina University, where they study in a variety of degree programs, most prominently business, engineering, and health sciences. Our location in the Great Smoky Mountains near Asheville, NC, offers a safe campus and local community in one of the most beautiful parts of the USA.   • IEP provides students with the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories, off-campus residences, or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. IEP also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience local culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available.   • Overview
  • The Intensive English Program at WCU is located in the beautiful mountains of the westernmost part of North Carolina in a safe and welcoming environment. IEP offers classes at three levels: high beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Instruction and strategies cover reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar as well as special topics such as Business English, academic research, iBT test-preparation and Intercultural Communication. There are 18 hours per week in language instruction plus a variety of cross-cultural activities throughout the semester.
    
    IEP students have access to all student services including on-campus housing and dining, free tutoring services, cultural events, student activities, a state-of-the-art gym, athletic facilities and university sports events. The fall and spring programs are semester-long (16 weeks) and the summer programs run 4-8 weeks.
