  • The University of Hawaiʻi English Language Program (HELP) is an intensive English language program run by the Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in Honolulu. Our program focuses on Academic English preparation and students who complete the program may be conditionally admitted to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The mission of HELP is to empower our students to succeed at the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa and other higher educational institutions, as well as in their personal and professional lives, by providing exceptional English as a Second Language instruction. As a unit of the renowned Department of Second Language Studies, HELP also advances understanding of language learning by promoting second-language research and professional development for members of the Department and other researchers. HELP provides international students with a gateway to successful university study by preparing them with a transformational learning experience encompassing academic English language and college readiness skills. Students in the program are also able to learn by actively participating in the local community through Service Learning, and by taking part in sporting and cultural activities at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa.   • HELP provides students with the opportunity to live in on- and off-campus dormitories, apartments and condos, or with a local homestay family. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. The school also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience local culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to request their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. For more information about housing options, contact us directly.   • The HELP program is located on the lower University of Hawaii (UH) Manoa campus near the main sporting and recreational sites of the university. HELP students have ready access to all the resources of the university, including the sports facilities. The location offers a comfortable and casual setting where students and teachers have ample opportunity to interact. In addition to the classrooms, the program has a Student Lounge where students can relax when not in class, borrow books from the student library, or just have lunch or a snack. The computer lab is where students can surf the Internet and read email from home, type and print homework assignments, or watch DVDs and videos. The program also offers complete wireless internet connectivity for students with their own wireless devices. The beautiful location on the park-like UH campus also offers easy access to Honolulu’s many attractions. The lovely beaches, green mountains, and cultural, entertainment, and shopping centers are within easy walking distance or by public transport. Honolulu is the largest city in the state of Hawaiʻi and also home to the State Capitol. Honolulu, which means "sheltered harbor" or "protected bay," is believed to have been founded as early as 1,000 years ago. The city was firmly established as the major center for the Hawaiian Islands by the mid-1800s. Hawaiʻi became the Aloha State in 1959 when it was formally admitted to the Union as the 50th state. Today, Honolulu is ranked as the safest large city in America, and Hawaii is the healthiest state in the country. It is home to America's only royal palace and is known for its tropical climate, lush green landscape, diverse population, and community spirit known as aloha.

  • Overview
  • HELP offers students an Academic English Program in a series of year-round intensive English courses. During the academic school year, August to May, there are four 8-week terms. In the summer, May to August, there are two 6-week terms. HELP students take four courses per term and study full-time for 20 hours per week. The curriculum is based upon current research and best practices in the field. The program focuses on preparing students for academic work at UHM or similar institutions. Students who successfully complete the curriculum may apply for conditional admission to the University of Hawaii. The four-level curriculum covers the skill areas of English reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar as well as test preparation for the TOEFL ITP. Depending on their level, students take from two to four required core classes and zero to two electives. The electives vary each term. Level placement is based upon the University of Michigan EPT (English Placement Test) scores, a writing sample, and a speaking test, which are given on Orientation Day. One of HELP’s program goals is to address individual student needs and goals. One way that the program meets this goal is by offering private lessons for students. During private lessons, you can study one-on-one with a HELP teacher to focus on a specific area of concern, such as pronunciation, speaking, presentation skills, academic writing, test preparation, grammar and vocabulary. With small class sizes of 6 to 16 students, HELP students have numerous opportunities to participate in class discussions, to ask questions, and to interact with classmates and instructors.

    自分にあったレベルでクラス分けされるのはすごくいいと感じたが、下の方のクラスだと日本人がほとんどのクラスで短期留学の私にとって英語を沢山使ってもっと早く伸ばしたい、外国人の友達を作りたいという願いは叶えずらいと思いました。ですが、私の学校は施設がとても綺麗で広くて先生のサポートも充実していたのでみんな不自由なく楽しく過ごせていると思います。

    1タームが終わりましたが、最初は何も分からず先生の言ってることすらもわかりませんでした。しかし先生が優しくわかりやすく、そしていつも気にかけてくださったお陰でとても充実したクラスになってます！最初はやはり不安でしたが、正直なんとかやれます！僕は英語が全く得意ではありませんでした。しかし約2ヶ月でかなり成長できたのではないかと思ってます！
    僕は留学をしてくれた親に感謝して、毎日勉学に励んでいます！
