- About the ESL Program
- Established in 1979, the Haggerty English Language Program (HELP) at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz is designed to help students from around the world improve their English language proficiency for personal, academic, and professional growth, as well as to introduce them to the unique American culture.
The curriculum includes 4 levels of instruction, each having distinctive linguistic and cultural emphases. Individual conversation partners are provided for each student to enhance their learning experience and to practice communication skills. A state-of-the-art language and computer laboratory is also available to HELP students to promote careful English practice and study, as well as individual assessment. Outside of the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in weekly cultural activities and field trips to enrich their American experience. Students gain full access to all university facilities, including the libraries, the campus gym, and computer labs with Internet access.

Our professors of English as a New Language are highly qualified, experienced, and helpful to all students. They are trained to meet the language needs of each student and will work with you to improve your reading, writing, listening, speaking and pronunciation in English.
You will also be able to meet many students from all over the world. This will enhance your language learning by giving you plenty of opportunity to use your English outside of the classroom. You may also come away with new life-long friendships and life-changing experiences.

- While attending the program, students have the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitory residence halls. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students – both American and international.

- New Paltz was recently ranked #3 on a list of “Best Small Towns in America.” Located midway between the New York state capital of Albany and dynamic New York City, the SUNY at New Paltz campus is beautifully nestled in the 300 year-old Village of New Paltz. Home to 8,600 residents, New Paltz peacefully sits between the historic Hudson River and the grand Shawangunk and Catskill Mountains and provides some of the most spectacular countryside scenery on the American east coast. The New Paltz community is surrounded by rich, lush farmlands of the Wallkill River Valley and scores of apple orchards and vineyards, making the region one of the leading apple-growing and wine making areas in the United States. New Paltz offers a ideal mix of commerce and natural beauty perfect for hiking, biking, or simply casually strolling along its many classic tree-lined streets. New Paltz is most famous for being home to Huguenot Street, the oldest continuously-inhabited street in the United States attracting visitors to tour original 17th century stone houses. The SUNY New Paltz campus is an easy 90-minute bus or train ride from the heart of New York City, famous for its Broadway musicals and theaters, many of the world’s foremost art museums, shops and unique boutiques, and fantastic restaurants.

- Founded in 1828, the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz is one of the 64 campuses of SUNY, the largest system of public higher education in the world. Home to approximately 8,000 students, including over 6,200 undergraduate and over 1,600 graduate students, and more than 400 international students representing over 60 nations, the 216-acre New Paltz campus offers its students a dynamically rich and multicultural educational experience. Comprised of 5 undergraduate schools and The Graduate School, New Paltz offers bachelor’s degrees in over 100 areas of specialization and graduate degrees in more than 50 areas.
New Paltz students can choose from a number of courses to study the areas of: business administration, international business, electrical, computer, and mechanical engineering, computer science, communications, music, and more, international relations, studio art, theatre arts, accounting, journalism, and women’s studies. Outside of the classroom, students have the opportunity to participate in more than 130 student organizations, 35 men and women sports teams and numerous volunteer groups. The New Paltz campus frequently hosts on-campus events, including concerts, recitals, plays and exhibits, as well as performances by professional musicians, entertainers, and prominent speakers.
The university has free student testing daily and will offer all students COVID19 vaccines on campus. Student who tests positive for COVID19 is placed in a quarantine area until a negative test is produced. - Conditional Admission / Credit Courses
- Conditional Admission to the university (Undergraduate programs and most graduate programs) is available for academically-qualified students. Students who apply to a degree program meet the university’s English language proficiency requirements by completing the Haggerty English Language Program and can be pre-placed into their level of English in the program.
Student in the Academic Purposes level may concurrently enroll in up to two academic courses at SUNY New Paltz after meeting with the ESL Student Advisor or Academic Coordinator.

Intensive English Program
- Overview
- The Intensive English Program offers two 16-week sessions during the fall and spring. Students enrolled in the full time program receive a minimum of 18 hours of in-class instruction each week.
The Program offers 4 levels of English classes: Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced, and Academic Purposes. During orientation, students take a placement test to examine their writing, listening, grammar, and speaking skills in order to help determine the level best-suited to their ability
Students in the highest level (Academic Purposes) may take academic content courses at the university in addition to their ESL classes or take only ESL classes. The highest level of our program is credit-bearing meaning students that continue into a degree program at SUNY New Paltz can start earning elective credit through our program. - Data

HELP provides limited airport pick-up service for US$40 that brings students directly to campus. Pickups are on fixed days, decided by the school, before each semester starts and drop off at the end of the semester. Transfer takes approximately 2 hours. Contact the school for more information.

I joined the HELP program to learn English and it was really helpful for my career and for dealing with people. The most important thing is that people in New Paltz are kind and patient. If I have one more chance, I definitely will go back to New Paltz. Anyway, choose this school because it is the best choice I have ever made.

The campus is very good and the class quality was also. While I was there, I felt there were many Korean students, but this changes depending on the time of year you go. Some students like being around others from their country and others prefer not to.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.I love New Paltz總之是一個很讚的小鎮，春夏秋冬各有不同的美麗。好山好水、人和善，風氣又自由尊重。是個唸書的好地方。而且離紐約市還滿近的，可當天往返，卻沒有都市的喧囂和市郊的雜亂。ESL學生亞洲人為一半，其他的中南美和歐洲人人數相近，有一些非洲學生。英語課程依程度分3級，每班約10來人。這個學校的教育與藝術系所很不錯，尤其是金屬工藝Metal Program很有名。

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful.I love New Paltz.처음 어학연수를 준비할땐 미국에 계시는 이모부님의 댁에서 가장 가깝고 이모부가 추천하시는 곳으로 가게됐습니다. 그곳이 바로 New Paltz. 처음 미국이라는 곳에 입국했을땐 많이 막막 했습니다. 하지만 그곳의 native speaker들도 너무 친철하게 대해주고 특히 ELS 프로그램 선생님들은 아주 친철하게 대해주셨습니다. 학교 수업을 마칠때쯤에는 모든 나라에서 온 친구들이 같이 헤어짐을 아쉬워 하고 각국에 돌아 갔을 때도 연락을 할 수 있도록 연락처도 주고 받았습니다. 그리고 New Paltz주변의 아름다운 경치를 만끽하다보면 어느새 영어가 일취월장하게 될 것입니다. 어학연수를 생각하고 계신다면 주저하지 말고 도전을 해보세요.^^ 그리고 여러분의 행복을 찾으세요..^^
