  • Study Options
    • 8 Week Academic Skills Program

    • Overview
    • The International English Language Institute’s offers five 8-week semesters throughout the year. Students receive 18 hours of in-class instruction per week, including computer laboratory instruction.

The Program offers 8 levels of English classes, from basic to advanced. Upon their arrival at the IELI, students are required to take the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) and a writing test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Students can use their TOEIC scores for placement at the IELI if they took the test within the last ten months and bring an official copy of their scores to registration.

The basic curriculum is designed to develop students’ skills in the areas of reading, writing, and grammar. Beginning-level students in levels 2 or 3 also attend a listening and conversation class. Our curriculum is designed to develop students’ skills in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The IELI’s oral skills classes provide opportunities to practice speaking and listening, and focus on academic, cultural or work-related topics and themes. Discussions on various topics, role play and presentations will be a key focus of these classes. Students at the most advanced levels are prepared for university-level proficiency examinations or may take a topic-based class that studies American theater or current events. Students who complete the advanced level may apply for undergraduate admission to a CUNY school without taking the TOEFL, provided they meet all other university requirements.

Small, interactive classes are emphasized. Class sizes range from 12 to 22 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.

      Studying at Hunter College
I was an IELI student of Hunter College and I attended the evening classes which were completely different from the classes held in the daytime during the semester. Most of my classmates came from Europe and Latin America and only a few students came from Asia. Most of my classmates did not have problems conversing in English. Even though they had accents, they still could speak English very fluently. Hunter College is a very good environment to improve your English skills, especially speaking and listening. Also, my teachers in reading and writing classes were very good. They inspired me to think more and describe ideas in my own words when I was studying. I used to receive information from teachers when I was a student in Taiwan, but I had to continually express my opinions during my study in the USA which was great practice. It was a culture shock to me. If you can get used to the particular learning atmosphere in New York, you will totally enjoy your studies in America.

Open the Window to See the World
I am an architecture designer. After working more then ten years in Taiwan, I really wanted to improve my professional skills and vision. Learning English is a way to enlarge my vision I think. Studying in Hunter College was one of the most fantastic periods in my life. Now I feel I have had a different view to observe many things. I also took advantage of living in New York City to explore many museums and resorts. Most of the teachers in Hunter College are considerate, professional, and funny. I appreciate I had the opportunity studying in Hunter.
