  • About the ESL Program
  • The Global Academy (Former ALP) was established in 1973 to provide non-native English speakers with the academic abilities and language skills essential for future academic success at an American university or to meet their individual career objectives. The Global Academy encourages intercultural understanding, provides support and guidance for issues both in and outside of the classroom and builds students' confidence to adapt to university life and American culture. Global Academy students gain access to the University's campus facilities and can enjoy using the library, a state-of-the-art theater, computer laboratories with Internet access, and athletic facilities. The Intensive English Program teaches a wide variety of English-language skills including general English and English for academic preparation. Program instructors have Master’s degrees in teaching and have first-hand experience working with international English learners. Global Academy emphasizes use of English outside the classroom through regular social activities and the Bay Area Experience class which offers weekly off-campus activities.

  • Housing
  • While attending the Global Academy, students have the opportunity to live in a dormitory where they can interact with English speakers. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students – both American and international. Students are encouraged to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The Global Academy may introduce private off-campus apartments or homestay, however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements.   • Situated on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay, Hayward is a vibrant and diverse community home to 145,000 residents. Located 40 kilometers southeast of San Francisco, the area's parks, arts groups, and recreational and cultural activities make Hayward an ideal place to live, study and play. Hayward's many attractions appeal to all tastes and preferences, from visiting native East Bay animals in their natural habitats at the Sulphur Creek Nature Center, exploring the traditional Japanese Gardens and having group picnics in Kennedy Park to enjoying the Summer Concert Series at nearby Memorial Park. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the 3,000-acre Garin and Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Parks and its wooded canyons, meadows, creeks and more than 20 miles of hiking trails. Golfers enjoy playing at Skywest, Hayward's professionally rated 18-hole golf course known as "one of the best municipal golf courses in the East Bay."   • Located in the heart of the beautiful and culturally diverse San Francisco Bay Area, California State University, East Bay offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in addition to Intensive English and other non-degree programs. Cal State East Bay's 342-acre campus sits high atop the East Bay hills, providing stunning views of the San Francisco Bay for its 13,500 students from California, throughout the US, and around the world. CSUEB is nationally recognized as among the most diverse universities in the US and Cal State East Bay's significant international student body includes students from 60 countries representing 8% of total enrollment.
    
    Founded in 1957, California State University, East Bay is a comprehensive public institution located in Northern California's Bay Area and is one of the 23 schools within the California State University System. Previously named California State University at Hayward, the University changed its name in early 2005 to California State University, East Bay. The University is comprised of 5 colleges and offers its students undergraduate degrees in 40+ majors and graduate degrees in over 25 fields. The university's many research, degree and exchange programs around the world create a stimulating academic and multicultural environment. Students are actively involved in more than 90 student clubs and organizations, including intramural sports teams, the student newspaper, radio and television stations, student government, and music, dance and theater groups.
  • Conditional Admission / Credit Courses
  • Qualified Global Academy students may be placed in university credit classes while they continue studying in the intensive English program. There is also a range of credit bearing certificate courses and a Pre-Business Analytics Program available for qualified students. Conditional Admission to the CSUEB undergraduate programs is available for students who are academically qualified, but have not met the CSUEB's English proficiency requirement (TOEFL 61 or IELTS 6.0) at the time of application. These students are issued a conditional admission letter to CSUEB and required to attend the ALP Intensive English Program until they meet the language requirement.

  • Intensive English Program

  • Overview
  • The Intensive English Program offers five 8-week sessions throughout the year. Students enrolled in the Program receive 18-20 hours per week of in-class instruction in order to meet their individual educational and career objectives. Each student is also assigned a personal faculty advisor to help them ease into their new environment, assist in selecting appropriate courses and move their students into a university credit program.
    
    The Program offers 7 levels of English classes, from high-beginner to advanced. Upon students' arrival at the Global Academy, they are required to take an English placement test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. The length of the program depends on the student's level of English upon arrival and academic progress. The Intensive English Program curriculum consists of a required Core Program of 3 courses: Writing, Listening/Speaking, Reading/Vocabulary. It is mandatory for students to take one course from a variety of electives at all levels, along with the core program. Electives include such courses as Business Culture of Silicon Valley, Business English, Community Service, Presentation Skills, Skills for Professional Success, Pronunciation, and University Preparation. All new students are also required to take the supplemental program “Bay Area Experience,” a weekly program of off-campus activities to encourage English use outside the classroom to practice their newly-developed skills.
    
    Global Academy students have the opportunity to meet with university students once a week through the "Speaking Partners Program" to practice their English conversational skills and learn more about American culture. A University Preparation Advising Workshop is offered to provide university degree counseling and admission advising and preparation for freshman year at CSUEB. IELTS/TOEFL preparation classes are available as well. Small, interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Class sizes average 12 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.

    CSU, East Bay is an Excellent Program
    

    When I was at the school, I realized that some students like having others from their home country there because it makes them feel more comfortable. Others want to be around only those from other countries. In any case, the nationality mix of the school changes depending on the time of year, so don't worry so much about that. CSU, East Bay is an excellent program with lots of good teachers.

    今、私はアメリカでの生活を続けていますがCalifornia State University East Bay は学校周辺の気候、雰囲気等がよく、過ごしやすい環境でした。学校が広いので迷うこともしばしば。日本人が多いので安心ですが、いつも日本人といると英語は全く上達しません。英語の上達が目的なら自ら積極的に他国の人と話しましょう。それと留学は決して楽ではありません。私の友人の多くが途中であきらめて日本に帰りました。しかし一人で異国の地で生活をするという体験は必ず自分を大きく成長させてくれると思います。
