    • About the ESL Program
    • Established in 1978, INTO University of South Florida offers an intensive English program designed for international students and professionals wanting to pursue academic degrees at an American college or university. Offering 18 hours of classes each week, the General English Program offers an integrated curriculum that covers the essential areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing at all levels of instruction while students at the advanced levels receive test preparation for the TOEFL, SAT and GRE. The General English Program is specifically designed for students who are considering entering the university in the future and focuses on developing academic discipline, writing research papers, delivering formal oral presentations, studying effectively and test-taking. As a unique part of the program, current and former INTO USF students volunteer to help students new to the program to answer questions about Tampa, life in the United States and life in the program. These student ambassadors also assist new students during the first days of the semester and help them find their way around campus. Outside of the classroom, INTO USF regularly organizes field trips and get-togethers for students to interact in a natural English-speaking setting. In the spring and fall, INTO USF organizes a welcome picnic to enjoy Tampa’s sunshine, play soccer and volleyball and go canoeing on the Hillsborough River. INTO USF students are offered instructional field trips to museums or sites of cultural interest including the Kennedy Space Center, the Ringling Museum and the Salvador Dali Museum. To further interact with the local community, INTO USF plans a service day for students to work together and build homes for Habitat for Humanity, visit the children at Shriners Hospital or feed the hungry at a local food kitchen.

    • Housing
    • While attending INTO USF, students have the option to live in on-campus dormitories or off-campus residences. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities, and other students – both American and international. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. INTO USF may provide information about private off-campus apartments; however, it is the students’ responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.

    • Academic English Program

    • Overview
    • The Academic English Program is offered year-round with sessions beginning multiple times each year. After finishing the program, students are able to use English successfully to complete academic course work at the undergraduate and graduate level and will be ready to participate in classroom interactions as they begin degree studies at the university. Students enrolled in the Program receive 18-25 hours of classroom instruction per week. Students applying for Academic English must have a minimum of a high school diploma, but all students may be accepted regardless of their English language skill level.

The Academic English Program offers English classes, from elementary to advanced levels. Courses in the program focus on developing the ability to use English to complete university level tasks while building knowledge of academic content and vocabulary. Upon the student's arrival, they are required to take an English proficiency test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Students in all levels of instruction develop their reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, grammar, and cultural skills to prepare themselves for future academic study in a university environment. Through organized classroom instruction and opportunities to engage outside of the classroom with other university and international students at the university, students rapidly build their skills and become more comfortable with English. Additionally, students can choose from a wide variety of elective classes and will have independent study time, outside cultural activities and conversation partner exchanges in order to enhance the overall study experience. Conversation partners meet informally to talk with one another and participate in social activities together. All Academic English Program students have access to university campus facilities. When students complete various levels of the program and meet academic requirements, they will be able to progress to either INTO Pathway programs to undergraduate and graduate study, direct undergraduate or direct graduate admission to the university.

Small, interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Class sizes range from 17 to 20 students. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.

    • Overview
    • The Undergraduate Pathway Program is offered year-round with sessions beginning each term. The Undergraduate Pathway Program is offered year-round with sessions beginning each term. Pathways are for students who want to study for a degree in the United States but may have lower test scores, or English language proficiency and require additional academic or language support in order to succeed during their first year in university. Students enrolled in the Pathway program will take both language and academic courses, earning them university credit upon matriculation. The program is especially designed for international students who are driven to achieve their degree in the same amount of time as domestic students.

The Undergraduate Pathway Program combines intensive language study, academic skills development and academic course work in a specific program designed to move students successfully through the first one or two semesters of a degree program. From the first day of classes, Pathway students study alongside domestic students in the same courses and receive intensive English language instruction and academic skills development courses. The student’s grades in these courses will count towards progression to the second year of undergraduate studies. Pathway program students have full access to all of the university facilities, classrooms and accommodations. All classes take place in the heart of campus. Undergraduate Pathway program students are required to live in on-campus university housing for the first part of their studies. However, students more than one year past high school graduation are not required to live on campus.

Small, interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction. Students receive the highest level of support during their transition to U.S. university life.

      USF provides plenty of options
For Muslims and Arab students specifically, the school
provides good food and it’s Halal. Here in Tampa you can
find Halal food both on and off campus. There is no need
to worry when leaving your country because USF provides
plenty of options for Middle Eastern students

      Living on Campus
I live on campus because I think it is more
comfortable for those who just arrived and in the
first semester. The campus is very big and very
often classes take place in different buildings and
you need to be there on time. So it is better to live
on campus where you have everything next to you
      and you know everything

They helped translate from English to Russian
Everyone at the INTO USF Center has really helped me.
They told me how to do everything, and they also helped me
with a class syllabus. I didn’t understand something after
looking at a dictionary, and I went there and they helped
translate from English to Russian. In my first two weeks at university, I went to the tutoring center four times.

Coming Back to USF for my Undergraduate Degree
This program has great diversity of nations and cultures.
The opportunities to interact with American High School
students and to have fun on campus as well as in Tampa
are great. It has been helpful for me to discover college life as an international student. I will definitely consider coming back to USF for my undergraduate degree!

      Helped me Pass the Exam
I chose USF because it had the perfect
opportunity to pass the GMAT exam. I didn’t know
how to pass this exam, and I couldn’t have done it
alone in my hometown. During the Pathway, I could
pass all my requirements, including GMAT. I used the
INTO USF tutors a lot for the GMAT, and they helped
me pass the exam and progress to the university.

      Great University
I am glad to have chosen USF because this is a great
university that really wants you to be here. They have
helped with many things, such as personal development,
jobs, education, among others. My experience at USF has
been great; I have grown up as a person because I have
experienced what is living alone, to have a job, success,
failure, and many aspects of life that prepare you to
succeed after college. What I have learned here has
prepared me to succeed after college.

Teachers are Always Ready to Help
At INTO USF, they helped me to adapt to the American
style of education and they were always there for me.
Classes are bigger here than in France, but the teachers
are always ready to help. Even though they have many
students, they are always there for you. I’m very glad that I came here; it’s a great experience.
