- About the ESL Program
- Established in 1992, the English Language Institute (ELI) at Pace University has been providing students and professionals from around the world with opportunities to improve their English skills for academic study, career advancement, or personal enrichment through a variety of programs, including Intensive English, Academic, TOEFL Preparation, Integrated English, Marketing, 2-week Summer School Programs, and Career Skills Development Courses. The curriculum integrates high-quality academic instruction with enjoyable cultural and social activities to encourage students to actively use their English skills in the classroom and in real-life situations. ELI students are considered full-time Pace students and have full access to all university facilities including several libraries, medical and counseling services, computer labs, fitness centers, swimming pool (Westchester campus), cafeterias, and the International Students Office that coordinates international programs and provides student services.
Students who successfully complete the Academic English programs at the ELI are eligible to apply to Pace University degree programs without a TOEFL or IELTS requirement. Students work with ELI Advisors to prepare applications for Pace University degree programs while studying at the ELI.

The English Language Institute (ELI) at Pace University offers students, visitors, and recent immigrants the opportunity to improve their English skills for academic study, career advancement, or personal enrichment through a variety of intensive programs. The ELI instructors are experienced, dedicated to their students, and all have Master's Degrees. As an ELI student at Pace, you will have access to all university facilities, including libraries, computer labs, cafeterias, sports and fitness centers, medical and counseling services, and the International Students Office. Conveniently located in downtown Manhattan, you can enjoy everything the city has to offer, and at the same time participate in many cultural and social activities organized by the ELI for additional real-life opportunities to use your English skills actively. - While attending the English Language Institute, students have the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories where they can experience American campus life in downtown New York City or on our Pleasantville campus. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students – both American and foreign. Nearby off-campus residences are available for students who prefer a more independent lifestyle. The ELI also works with a professional homestay agency to arrange homestays for students who want to experience American culture as a member of a family. - Pace University has two campuses. Our flagship campus is located in the heart of downtown Manhattan and in the civic and financial center of New York City. The campus is located only minutes from Wall Street, Chinatown, Little Italy, and the artsy neighborhood of Soho. Saw Mill River Parkway - Northbound: Take exit 26, “Taconic State Parkway.” The first exit on the Taconic Parkway is for Pace University at Pleasantville – Route 117. At the end of the exit there is a traffic light. Entrances one and two to the campus are directly in front of you, straight across the intersection. If you turn right at the light and proceed east on Rte 117, entrance three is 2/10 of a mile on the left. Entrance three is the most popular entrance with access to our residence halls and administrative buildings.
Saw Mill River Parkway - Southbound: Take Exit 29, “Manville Road/Pleasantville.” At the stop sign, turn left onto Manville Road. Travel 2/10 of a mile. At the stop sign, turn right onto Route 117 (Bedford Road). The campus is 3/10 of a mile on the right. You will see three entrances, marked three, then two, then one. Entrance three is the most popular entrance with access to our residence halls and administrative buildings.
Sprain Brook Parkway and the Taconic State Parkway - Northbound: Take the Sprain Brook Parkway northbound. At the Hawthorne interchange, the Sprain Brook will lead directly onto the Taconic State Parkway. The first exit on the Taconic Parkway is for Pace University at “Pleasantville – Route 117.” At the end of the exit there is a traffic light. Cross Westchester Expressway - Route 287 - Westbound: Take exit 3 to the Sprain Brook Parkway northbound and proceed north as above. Tappan Zee Bridge And Cross Westchester Expressway - Route 287 - East After paying the toll on the Tappan Zee Bridge, stay in the right lane and proceed south on Route 87 (New York State Thruway). Get off at Exit 8A, which is marked: Route 87South/Rte 119/Saw Mill Parkway NORTH. Remain in the right lane as the exit splits. Follow the Saw Mill River Parkway North and get off at exit 26, “Taconic State Parkway.” The first exit on the Taconic Parkway is for Pace University at Pleasantville – Route 117. At the end of the exit there is a traffic light. Entrance one and two to the campus are directly in front of you, straight across the intersection. From Manhattan and Bronx
Major Deegan - New York State Thruway - Route 87 - Northbound Take exit 7A “Saw Mill River Parkway North” and follow the directions above.
Route 9A – Northbound: Follow Rte 9A north and exit at “Route 117/Sleepy Hollow/Pleasantville.” This will be a left lane exit. At the end of the exit, at the traffic light, turn right and proceed under the Taconic State Parkway to the first traffic light. Turn left into entrance one and two, or proceed east 2/10 of a mile to entrance three. Entrance three is the most popular entrance with access to our residence halls and administrative buildings.
Route 9A – Southbound: Follow Route 9 into Croton on Hudson and take the exit for Route 9A “Briarcliff Manor.” Exit at Route 117/Sleepy Hollow/Pleasantville. This will be a left lane exit. At the top of the exit, at the light, turn left and proceed under the Taconic State Parkway to the first traffic light. Turn left for entrance one and two, or proceed 2/10 of a mile east and turn left into entrance three. Entrance three is the most popular entrance with access to our residence halls and administrative buildings.
By Train
Take the Metro-North Railroad Harlem Line to Pleasantville Station. For schedule information, call Metro-North direct at 1-800-METRO-INFO or visit the Consult our schedule.
During the Fall and Spring academic semesters, connect to the Pace Shuttle Bus, which stops at Memorial Plaza at the southwest corner of the Pleasantville train station. The shuttle bus picks you up from the train station twice an hour at approximately 5 and 35 minutes after the hour (until 6:00 p.m.) and takes you to the campus, with stops at Miller, Wilcox and on mail runs, Castelton). Consult our schedule. Take the Bee-Line Bus #6 to the campus (see below).
By Bus
The campus in Pleasantville is served by the Bee-Line Bus System. Route 6 of that system, “Yonkers/White Plains/Pleasantville,” terminates at Memorial Plaza, Pleasantville, near the Pleasantville train station. You can connect with the Pace shuttle bus as described above. For schedule information, call Bee-Line system at (914) 813-7777 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. weekdays, or visit the Bee-Line Bus System Web site.

Intensive English Program
- Overview
- The Intensive English Program offers two 7-week sessions during the Fall and Spring semesters, and two 6-week sessions during the Summer semester. Students enrolled full-time in our Intensive English or Academic Programs receive 18 hours per week of in-class or online instruction.
The Program offers 4 levels of English classes, from Advanced Beginner to Upper Intermediate, and 2 levels of Advanced Academic English. Prior to their arrival, students take an online English placement test which helps determine the level best suited to their ability. Students also have an online advising session with a member of the ELI’s academic team. Students who successfully complete their ELI program are awarded a Certificate of Completion. The Program's curriculum is designed to help students, visitors, and recent immigrants develop their English skills for future academic study, professional advancement, or personal enrichment.
Students who successfully complete the Academic English programs with the English Language Institute are eligible to apply to Pace University degree programs without a TOEFL or IELTS requirement. Students work with the student advisors to prepare applications for Pace University degree programs while studying at the ELI.
Students in all levels of instruction study the essentials of Grammar and Writing, improve their Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary skills, as well as develop their Listening, Speaking, and Pronunciation skills through focused and communicative exercises and assignments.The Academic English program prepares students for U.S. university degree programs. Students develop academic presentation and note-taking skills, and learn how to write university-level research papers. With the help from the Academic Advisors, students are able to progress through the program and enhance their skills. Students at the Advanced Academic level are permitted to attend undergraduate credit courses while continuing their studies at the ELI.
While attending the ELI, students are encouraged to experience U.S. culture firsthand by joining university groups and participating in cultural and social activities. ELI students have the opportunity to meet with native English speakers through the Conversation Partner Program sponsored by Pace University. In this program, students are able to practice their English conversational skills, develop greater international understanding, and establish warm friendships.
Small, interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Class sizes range from 12 to 16 students with an average of 14 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.
The English Language Institute offers three distinct 2-week Summer School programs during the months of July and August. The International Relations Summer Program meets on the New York City campus. The Leadership & Entrepreneurship Program also meets on the New York City campus, and the English + Filmmaking Program meets on the Pleasantville campus. 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful.Pace大学的ESL学院有来自世界各地的学生(不像有些学校学生的族裔比较单一),虽然大家的英语口音南腔北调,但是多元化的文化交流让人开阔了眼界,增长了见识,是你了解这奇妙世界的小窗口。同时,学校的地理位置得天独厚——与纽约市政厅、布鲁克林大桥、以华尔街为主的金融区、17码头及唐人街近在咫尺……在这里我不能不提17码头,下课后步行10分钟就可以和同学们到码头吹吹风、看云影天光、喂海鸟……很是惬意!
学校除学习外对学生其他方面的照顾也很周到,特别是心理情绪上如有不适,学校的心理咨询机构可以及时提供优质的免费心理咨询服务。要想到纽约游学,Pace是一个很不错的选择。

地點很棒,一出學校就有地鐵站,而且隔壁就是Brooklyn Bridge,financial district和south street seaport也都在附近,走路到world trade center只要10分鐘,在那邊可以搭另一班地鐵,也可以坐path train到NJ,總之真的很方便。
課程的話,一開始會先考試,測驗學生的英文程度,之後會有老師建議學生該拿什麼課,我拿的四門課裡,老師都還滿認真的,作業也不少,會有一點點壓力,不過我覺得這樣是好的,才真的有學到東西。
價錢方面的話,應該算是Manhattan裡比較便宜的學校了,雖然Pace不像其他名校一樣有名,但對於ESL這種沒有學分也沒有學位的課程來說,我覺得選擇Pace還滿划算的。
另外,大部份的課都是下午兩點多就結束了,之後的時間都是自己的,我覺得這樣子的課程安排剛剛好,我那六個禮拜內,玩遍了整個紐約,也學到了很多東西,很充實,是個很開心的暑假。

學生多元、教職員親切,但是上課課本比較麻煩,
都是ㄧ本很貴的原文書,但未強迫購買,
可以向詢問ELI負責人詢問二手書。

宿舍方面是學校分配,如有入學意願的學生可能需要在申請時特別詢問,因不同宿舍設備及價錢都有落差。倘若真的分配到不滿意的宿舍,記得留意佈告或主動詢問,只要有床位是可以更換的。
師資部分有進步的空間,就學期間,有些課程的老師讓我獲益良多,班上互動也很好,但部分課程卻讓人失望。所以在選課方面建議多詢問舊生,並善用加退選。

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful.ESL之感想我是07年9月到Pace ELI上課的,念的是pre-graduate的課程。上了一個兩個terms(一個學期),度過了幾個月好玩的日子,不過,跟在其他外面的語言中心或是其他學校ELI,ESL的同學相比,我在Pace的課程明顯的重很多。重= 好,因為,課業重才會學的多!藉著做project的機會,跟同學小組meeting的機會,都讓我們的口語及寫作上有明顯的進步。裡面有位Andrew老師,非常注重發音,要求我們上台報告要錄影,還要寫review,這樣才會知道自己發音哪裡有問題,我覺得這個方法幫助我很大!希望我的意見能夠幫助到想要到Pace ELI的學生!

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful.특히 MBA를 준비하고 계시는 분들!제가 있었던 Pace University의 ELI 코스는 상당히 체계적인 수업이 많았습니다. 가장 마음에 들었던 것은, 다양한 수업도 수업이지만, 정해진 시간표가 주어지지 않고 대학 강의를 수강 신청하듯 자신이 원하는 과목만을 직접 신청할 수 있다는 점이었습니다.
처음 들어갔을 때 level 4를 배정 받았는데요, 이 등급에 속해있는 과목들에는 일반적인 reading이나 listening 수업 뿐만 아니라 TOEFL 시험을 준비하는 수업도 있었고, 평소에도 쓰일법한 idiom을 전문으로 가르쳐주는 수업도 있어서 이를 통해 일상영어를 좀더 접할 수 있었습니다. 무엇보다 가장 좋았던 수업은 American Business Culture과 Case Studies로 연결되는 비즈니스 수업이었는데요, 미국에서의 비즈니스 환경이나 실제로 행해지는 여러 협상 노하우를 배울 수 있어서, 한국에서 경영학부를 전공하던 저에게 가장 흥미있는 수업이 되었습니다. :)
또한 Pace University는 특히 MBA 대학원으로 유명해서 여러 많은 ELI 학생들 중에는 Pace의 MBA 입학을 목표로 하고 오는 경우가 많았습니다. 그래서 그들을 위해 따로 Pre-graduate 코스를 마련해서 원하는 사람이 들을 수 있도록 했습니다.
그뿐만 아니라 대학 부설이었기 때문에 그밖의 대학시설들을 사용할 수 있었고, 조금이나마 같은 학생들의 생활을 함께 체험할 수 있었습니다. :D

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful.心に残る留学体験大学4年の冬休みに1ヶ月間の短期留学を行いました。大学の附属語学学校ということもあり、大学の設備等が自由に使え、授業以外では図書館等で学習を行い、ロケーションもNY中心地だったので、課外活動や放課後にクラスメートと観光することもできました。英語も少しは身に着きましたが、それ以上にクラスメートと仲良くなれたこと、NYの街の雰囲気を肌で感じることが出来、短期ではありましたが忘れられない思い出になりました。

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful.やってみる会社からの研修で6ヶ月間、NYへ行きました。そのプログラムの一部として語学研修でペース大学に6週間サマーセメスターに6週間通いました。スタッフにも日本語を話せる人はいないし、学生も日本人はいませんでした。でも、非常に親切にお世話してくださり、他の国の留学生達ともコミュニケーションが取れるようになり、食事や買い物にも出かけ、忘れられない留学となりました。おかげで、その後の研修で、ファンドのマネージャーとのミーティングなども、こなすことができるようになりました。英語が話せない私でも、それなりの成果が得られ、先ず行って、やってみることだと思います。

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful.ペース大学の留学を経て学んだこと学校の施設、立地条件はすばらしく毎日学校に行くのが楽しかった思い出があります。また、駅からも近いというのはとてもよかったです。ニューヨークは地下鉄でどこでも行けますのでいろいろなところに出向き肌で感じて英語や文化を学ぶことができます。また授業ですが日本人が非常に少なく、英語を話す機会しかなかったことを覚えています。生徒の意欲も高いのでモチベーションが高いまま授業に臨んでいました。
