  • Founded in 1978, the Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP) is an intensive program in English, designed to help non-native speakers improve their abilities to use English and to introduce students to North American culture. This program includes classroom procedures and academic work at the university level - undergraduate (BA/BS) or graduate (Master, Doctorate). The CIEP has full accreditation from CEA (The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation) and is a proud member of UCIEP (University and College Intensive English Programs), an independent consortium of university and college-administered intensive English Programs in the United States, and EnglishUSA (AAIEP) which promote professional standards and quality instruction in intensive English programs.

    Thank you for visiting our profile on ApplyESL.com. The Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP) of the University of Northern Iowa is located in the clean, safe city of Cedar Falls, Iowa. The university has a beautiful, open campus. CIEP students have their classes in university classrooms and live in the university dormitories. The CIEP instructors are experienced, energetic, and very dedicated to their students' education. Our students can use all university facilities including the library, computer labs, cafeterias, and sports centers. Outside of class, we organize trips for education, culture, or just plain fun. The university plans a trip to Chicago every year. You can also visit the Mall of America's about 4 hours away by car. Please contact me if you have any questions.   • Housing
  • CIEP staff assists students with on-campus housing arrangements. Most students in the CIEP live in University dormitories sharing rooms with English-speaking roommates. It is best to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. CIEP staff may introduce private off-campus apartments information, but students have to make necessary arrangements by themselves.   • The CIEP is located at the UNI in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Cedar Falls is a small college town of 35,000 residents near the greater metropolitan area of Waterloo, Iowa (population 100,000.) Students arrive at the Waterloo, Iowa (ALO) Municipal airport - 10 minutes from campus. The University’s location in the residential community of Cedar Falls provides students with the advantages of a city and yet a peaceful, clean, and safe atmosphere in which to study and live. Cedar Falls is in northeast Iowa, not far from Chicago and Minneapolis, and is served by major airlines to the Airport. Both Cedar Falls and Waterloo have a variety of recreational, shopping, and cultural centers.

  • In 1876 the university began as the Iowa State Normal School. Today, the University of Northern Iowa offers 120-degree majors in four undergraduate and 10 graduate degree programs. For the 11th consecutive year, the University of Northern Iowa is ranked second in the "Midwestern Universities -- Master's" category for public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2007 "America's Best Colleges" guidebook. UNI has also been named one of the "Best in the Midwest" in the 2006 Princeton Review Best 351 College Rankings guide. In the 1996 Best Colleges Guide, UNI ranked 11th among Midwest regional universities, the only public institution to make the top 15. The 750 acre campus features more than 40 buildings including the Ethnic Minorities Cultural and Education Center, a building originally constructed in 1890. New campus additions include the Center for Energy and the Environmental Education Center, the US$10.2-million Business Building, the new Performing Arts Center with 1600 seats, the Center for Multicultural Education, the McCollum Science Hall and the McLeod Center, which is one of the newest athletic centers in the Midwest. UNI has more than 180 student groups and organizations operating on campus.

  • Overview
  • The Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP) offers five 8-week sessions throughout the year with sessions beginning in June, August, October, January and March. Students enrolled in CIEP receive four hours of classroom instruction on a daily basis.
    
    CIEP offers 8 levels of English instruction, from beginning to advanced. Upon their arrival at CIEP, students take a placement test to help determine the level best-suited to their ability. Once the session begins, teachers monitor each student’s progress. Under normal circumstances, students can progress one level in a class within each 8-week session.
    Students in all levels of instruction focus on developing their skills in the areas of reading, writing, grammer, listening and speaking in order to prepare themselves for study at an American college or university. Students who are in level 5 classes and above have the opportunity to take an institutional TOEFL once a session.
    
    The CIEP offers activities for students to meet other international and American students, while learning about American culture and celebrations. The different activities that are provided are coffee hours, holiday parties, potlucks, movie and game nights, field trips, and cultural lectures. There is also the conversation partner program, the Families and Friends host family program and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). These are important listening and speaking activities for CIEP students. They provide students opportunities to develop their English skills outside the classroom, as well as learn about living in the American culture.
    
    Midum-sizes and interactive classes are emphasized to ensure full student participation. Class sizes range from 12 to 16 students per class. Every effort is made to keep classes at an ideal size for effective English language instruction.
