New Orleans is an Amazing City!
After graduating from Marmara University in Istanbul in March 2014, I decided to go to New Orleans, Louisiana to learn English. New Orleans is an amazing city and it has a unique culture, festivals, delicious traditional foods, and welcoming people that make you enjoy every day while you are studying. My education in the United States started with the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) at the University of New Orleans (UNO). I took grammar, writing, listening/speaking, reading, and conversation classes. After seven months, I passed the English proficiency exam, which is offered by IELP, and I was eligible to enroll at UNO, where I studied Electrical Engineering at UNO. In 2018, I obtained my second bachelor’s degree. It was an amazing experience to study at UNO and in the city of New Orleans.

      Successful Academic Pathway
The Intensive English Language Program was the foundation of my successful academic pathway in the United States. I enrolled in the program with very little knowledge of English and lack of confidence in my ability to master a foreign language. By the end of the course, I not only managed to learn a foreign language, but also successfully passed a very hard exam to enroll in a master’s degree at the University of New Orleans. IELP was more than a second language program. IELP was the family that made me feel great and confident about my potential. Here I felt welcomed and highly appreciated for the skills and abilities I own. While in the program, I made lifetime friends and built strong relationships with students from all over the world learning about their cultures, religions, customs, and traditions. IELP has offered great learning methods and tons of hands-on experiences that geared me up for my academic career. Today, thanks to IELP, I am one step closer to my vision of becoming a professor and a worldwide motivational speaker.

      “The Big Easy” hospitality
The Intensive English Language Program is an accelerated English learning program. Even though I had knowledge of the English language before coming to the USA, IELP helped me improve in areas, such as listening, reading, vocabulary, writing, and speaking. It also helped me be more comfortable communicating with English speakers from all over the world. These experiences include working as a credit and collections analyst at Globalstar Inc., and at my most current position as manager of Vieux Carré Pizza in the French Quarter.

IELP made us discover “The Big Easy” hospitality, diverse people, and great food. I now have my bachelor’s degree in finance from UNO and I plan on returning to get my MBA.

Warmth and Enthusiasm of IELP Teachers
I am a student of the University of New Orleans and I am an International Studies major. My starting point at the University of New Orleans is the IELP program. My memories of the IELP are the warmth and enthusiasm that the IELP teachers had for me. They understand that the writing style of international students is greatly influenced by their own countries’ writing styles. Therefore, the teachers always try to help students overcome this challenge. I was really impressed with the enthusiasm of my Level 6 writing teacher, Antonio. He met each student individually to talk about their writing errors and show them the American writing style. Thanks to him, I developed my writing skills as well as my organization so much. This has helped me a lot because with my major, I have to write a lot of essays.

The Path to a Successful Academic Career
When I first joined the Intensive English Language Program at UNO, my expectations were to improve my English grammatically, conversationally, and also my writing skills. I had already obtained a degree in Tourism Management in France, but I was not necessarily confident when it came to my academic abilities. I was never the type of person to make friends easily, or to be comfortable in a classroom full of people I did not know. But right from the start, the IELP faculty members built each student up. By highlighting our various backgrounds and cultural richness, they made all of us feel like these differences were part of what made us unique. All of a sudden we were not only students or professors taking part in the same program, we were a team reaching for a common goal. No one felt isolated, the time flew by, and we learned a lot both in the classroom and during out of campus activities and social events. The IELP paved the path to a successful academic career by transforming my limiting beliefs from “I don’t have what it takes to accomplish my objective” to “I sure can”. I would not have gone on to get a computer science degree if it wasn’t for that particular semester. The silver lining to spending a summer in the classroom was how much fun we actually had.
