  • About the ESL Program
  • Established in 1975, International Gateways offers top-quality English language instruction designed to meet the professional, academic, and practical needs of its students. The class curriculum is constructed for those students who are planning to attend an American college or university or for others who are looking to improve their English communication skills for personal or professional advancement. In addition to offering a challenging academic curriculum, International Gateways also provides students with hands-on experience in learning the American culture through field trips and activities. All International Gateways students receive a San José State University (SJSU) student ID card, allowing them to have full access to all on-campus facilities, the state-of-the-art computer lab located in the International Gateways building, and the local bus and train transportation service. International Gateways additionally offers academic advising to its students where questions regarding their academic progress, SJSU classes, or gaining admission to a college or university will be answered. International Gateways is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.

    Welcome to International Gateways at San José State University! Today, I invite you to learn more about our program and apply through ApplyESL. Since 1975, International Gateways has offered our students excellent English language instruction to meet their academic, practical and professional needs. Students are provided with a challenging academic curriculum complimented by field trips and activities to experience American culture firsthand. Ranked as the 5th best place to live in the United States, San José offers our students a comfortably mild climate and, on average, over 300 days of sunshine. The beautiful and charming cities of San Francisco and Berkeley, along with the stunning beaches of Santa Cruz and Carmel, are all within an hour of the SJSU campus.   • Housing
  • The school provides students with the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories, off-campus residences, or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. The school also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience local culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments are also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.

  • The SJSU campus is situated in the heart of thriving downtown San José. Known as the Gateway to the Bay Area, San José is home to over 920,000 residents and is the third largest city in California and the 11th largest in the United States. Ranked as the Fifth Best Place to Live in America by Money magazine, the San José community provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy its world-class cultural arts scene, theme parks, wineries, and professional sports teams. International Gateways students are within easy walking distance of many trendy restaurants, parks, movie cinemas, museums, and a dynamic nightlife. Students will find sightseeing to be very easy by using the convenient public transportation free-of-charge with their SJSU student ID card. San José enjoys 300 days of sunshine each year and comfortable temperatures averaging 70°F annually. The stunning beaches of Santa Cruz and Carmel, as well as San Francisco, “America’s Favorite City,” and charming Berkeley, are all located within an hour from the SJSU campus. During the winter season, skiing and other mountain sports are readily available and are a 3-hour drive from San José.

  • Founded in 1857, San José State University (SJSU) provides students with a comprehensive university education. SJSU is not only the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast, but it is also one of the top regional public universities in the western United States. Situated on 154 acres in downtown San José, the SJSU main campus features more than 50 major buildings on 19 city blocks. As one of the 200 top research universities in the nation, SJSU offers rigorous course work and research opportunities to more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students among its eight colleges. SJSU is most well-known for its nationally-recognized departments in the areas of: Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Art, and Graduate Occupational Therapy. Undergraduate and graduate-level business programs also attract international professionals from around the world to the Silicon Valley. In fact, Silicon Valley firms employ more graduates from SJSU than from any other university in the United States. As a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the SJSU athletic teams, “The Spartans,” spark excitement in the campus community come game season.

  • International Gateways students who meet the 450 TOEFL requirement (133 Computer-based) have the opportunity to additionally enroll in SJSU courses for credit. No conditional admission to the university is available.

  • From Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport:
    
    School provides a pick up service for US$67.50 that brings students directly to their housing accommodations. Although travel time varies depending on where students will live, it usually takes approximately 15 minutes.
    Students can also travel directly to campus by taxi that will cost approximately US$20 and arrive in approximately 20 minutes. Buses that run on limited schedules are also available.
    
    From San Francisco International Airport:
    
    School provides a pick up service for US$91.80 that brings students directly to their housing accommodations. Although travel time varies depending on where students will live, it usually takes approximately 1 hour.
    Students can also travel directly to campus by taxi that will cost approximately US$100 and arrive in approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

    学生サポートをきちんとしてくれる学校です。学校の敷地はとってもきれいでカフェテリアも素敵だったし、寮もいい雰囲気でとにかく楽しかったです。図書館には会議室があってそれも使うことが出来、友達とアサインメントをするのに役立ちました。病気になった時も学校内に病院があるので医療費を気にすることなく病院にかかれたのも良かったです。卒業後は留学で得た英語力を活かしてオーストラリアの国際弁護士事務所で働いています。

    ３週間の観光を兼ねたクラスと８週間の大学入学準備クラスを受講しました。最初のクラスでは基本的な会話や作文を学び、週末にはサンフランシスコ観光もしました。現地での生活に慣れるいいキッカケになったと思います。８週間クラスではまずTOEFLを受験して、その点数でレベル分けされます。Writing、Critical thinking、Public speakingなど、アメリカの大学で学ぶ上で不可欠なスキルを習得しました。授業の内容が濃く、宿題も大変でしたが、先生方が非常に熱心でスキルも高いので、とても充実した８週間でした。学生課のスタッフも頼りがいがあり、進路や生活のことなど何でも相談に乗ってくれます。８週間クラスを修了後は、SALの先生の薦めでサンノゼ州立大学の夏季授業を受講しました。SALの生徒の中には、大学とSALの授業に掛け持ちで出ている人もいました。日本を発つ前にしっかり情報収集＆TOEFLの学習をして、現地で効率よく学ぶことをお薦めします。

    留学で得たもの
    

    今振り返ると、留学はいろんな意味で私を強くしてくれました。　アメリカは自己責任のもとに成り立つ自立を大事にする国なので、最終的には自分で何でも行動しないといけなく、とてもアクティブに行動するようになりました。そのおかげで忍耐力も得られ、自分の手に入れたい情報はすべて自分で調べ、それが自分の知識として残るので、とても精神的に鍛えられました。
