: : About the School

Founded in 1978, the English Language Center (ELC) is a group of private language schools that provide a rigorous academic curriculum to build students' communicative competence. Operating schools in some the most desirable locations in the United States (Boston, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara), the ELC provides its students with high-quality instruction designed to meet their individual needs while allowing them to study in dynamic, exciting environments. The ELC provides free College Counseling and University Placement services for its students to help them select a college and coach them throughout the application process. As the ELC partners with a number of colleges in the United States, students have a certain advantage to use the ELC's services to apply to their desired degree program. Such advantages include conditional letters of acceptance and special TOEFL waiver agreements, as well as concurrent enrollment and valuable class auditing opportunities. In their spare time, students have opportunities to participate in activities arranged by school to enjoy different social and cultural experiences and practice their English in real-life situations. Students are also encouraged to independently explore their new city, attend professional sports games or experience some of the city's vibrant, eclectic neighborhoods. The ELC is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The ELC Boston Center has hosted thousands of students from around the world. Recently, the majority of students have come to the school from Asia, including Japan (20%), Korea (15%) and Taiwan (5%). Students also come from countries in Latin America (15%), Europe, the Middle East, Africa and others.
: : Faculty Qualifications

ELC instructors are highly-qualified, native speaking professionals that help their students advance through their programs quickly. Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of the instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
: : Housing

The ELC provides students with the opportunity to live in off-campus residences or enjoy a homestay experience. For students who prefer an independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. Homestays are another living option for those students who want to experience the local culture as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments are also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

The ELC Boston Center is centrally located in the stylish, upscale Back Bay neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. Known for its gracious brownstone buildings, bookstores, sidewalk caf駸 and fashionable boutiques lining historic Newbury Street, Back Bay is an ideal location for students as they will find themselves in the center of it all. As the capital and largest city in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Boston is also one of the most historic cities to live in the United States. Today, Boston is the home to an estimated 570,000 Bostonians. Widely recognized as being the nation's greatest college town, Boston is often called the Athens of America as it is dubbed the country's educational capital that houses more than 60 colleges and universities in the area, creating an atmosphere rich with artistic, social and intellectual opportunities. Sports enthusiasts certainly do not have a problem in finding a team to cheer for in Boston, a city home to dedicated fans that are serious about their sports teams, including the Boston Celtics (NBA basketball), the New England Patriots (NFL football), the Boston Bruins (NHL hockey), the New England Revolution (soccer) and the historic, much beloved 2004 World Series champions, the Boston Red Sox. There are countless opportunities for Boston residents to enjoy easy weekend getaways along the East Coast, whether it is to go sightseeing in Providence or New York City, feast on lobster in Maine, hike New Hampshire's White Mountains or explore the magnificent beaches of Cape Cod.
