: : About the ESL School

Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Learning from native speaking instructors, students study from a well-developed curriculum designed to enhance their fluency and accuracy and hone their skills in the areas of structure/speaking, conversation, and reading/writing. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. As an added feature, more than 550 American colleges and universities accept the ELS Certification of English in place of the TOEFL in order to admit students to their undergraduate degree programs. ELS Language Centers is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The ELS Center at Barry University has hosted thousands of students from more than 40 countries around the world. Recently, the majority of students have come to ELS from Asia, including Japan (24%), Korea (13%), and Taiwan. Students also come from countries in Latin America (34%), Europe (17%), the Middle East (5%), and other countries worldwide.
: : Faculty Qualifications

ELS instructors are highly-qualified, native speaking professionals. Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of ELS instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
: : Housing

ELS provides students with the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories, off-campus residences, or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

The ELS Language Center on the Barry University campus is located in Miami Shores, an intimate residential community located between the cities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale and home to 10,300 residents. World-famous South Beach ("SoBe") boasts not only a trendy nightlife and award-winning beaches, but more significantly the largest concentration of 1920s and 1930s Art Deco architecture in the world. With five professional sports teams - the Dolphins (NFL football), the Heat (basketball), the Marlins (national league baseball), the Panthers (NHL hockey) and the Miami Fusion (soccer) - Miami sports enthusiasts have ample opportunities to watch live games year-round. The area's subtropical climate with average year-round temperatures being 77ーF degrees promotes an outdoor lifestyle, including scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, golf, horseback riding and enjoying Miami's pristine beaches. A short drive outside of Miami will take you to the historic Florida Keys, MGM Studios and Disney World in Orlando, Busch Gardens in Tampa, the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral and the Everglades National Park in Southern Florida, one of the nation's largest parks and home to many rare and endangered species.
: : About the College/University

Originally founded as Barry College in 1940 by the Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Michigan, Barry University has grown to become a Catholic, coeducational institution that ensures high-quality academics and a caring environment with an added religious dimension that promotes community service. Barry students are encouraged to explore their individual interests and develop the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed while small class sizes allow more personal interaction between classmates and professors, building one-on-one relationships that last a lifetime. In the 2003 edition of America's Best Colleges published by the U.S. News & World Report, Barry's academic quality was ranked as one of the strongest in South Florida; Barry continues to maintain its position in the second tier of master's-granting universities in the South. The university's pristinely-landscaped campus and picturesque Spanish-style architecture is home to 9,200 undergraduate, graduate and adult/continuing students from 49 U.S. states and more than 80 nations from around the world. Barry tailors over 70 undergraduate majors, 50 graduate programs and several adult degree programs to meet students' individual academic interests and needs, offered among the institution's 10 academic schools: Adult and Continuing Education; Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Human Performance and Leisure Sciences; Law; Natural and Health Sciences; Nursing; Graduate Medical Sciences; and Social Work. Outside of the classroom, Barry students have ample opportunities to get involved in the campus community and join one of the 90 student-run organizations. Students can build homes for the less fortunate with Habitat for Humanity, join the scuba club, host a show on the campus radio station, WBRY, take a salsa dancing class, join a religious retreat, or perform in one of the many theater or dance troupes that regularly perform on-campus.
