: : About the ESL School

Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Learning from native speaking instructors, students study from a well-developed curriculum designed to enhance their fluency and accuracy and hone their skills in the areas of structure/speaking, conversation, and reading/writing. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. As an added feature, more than 550 American colleges and universities accept the ELS Certification of English in place of the TOEFL in order to admit students to their undergraduate degree programs. ELS Language Centers is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The ELS Center at the Florida Institute of Technology has hosted thousands of students from more than 30 countries around the world. Recently, the majority of students have come to ELS from Asia, including Korea (25%), Japan (13%), and Taiwan (13%). Students also come from countries in Latin America (28%), Europe (7%), the Middle East (8%), and other countries worldwide.
: : Faculty Qualifications

ELS instructors are highly-qualified, native speaking professionals. Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of ELS instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
: : Housing

ELS provides students with the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

The ELS Language Center on the Florida Tech campus is located in Melbourne, a safe, residential community in Brevard County, commonly known as being on the "Space Coast" of Central Florida for its close proximity to NASA and the Kennedy Space Center. Home to over 75,000 residents, Melbourne is a comfortable place to live with its picturesque, tree-lined streets filled with unique shops, street caf駸, boutiques and diverse restaurants. The downtown area's architecture is an inspired and eclectic mixture of old and new, featuring creative storefronts, alleyways and street arcades. While most of Melbourne is located on the Florida mainland, a small portion is also located on the nearby barrier island with the Indian River Lagoon separating the mainland from the island. The Sebastian Inlet cuts through the barrier island, creating a picturesque waterway connecting the Indian River Lagoon with the Atlantic Ocean. The Sebastian State Park is located on the barrier island and is a beautiful place to have a picnic, to go fishing, shrimping or clamming, to enjoy bird watching, go sailing or kayaking or enjoy an evening camping under the stars. If it is a slower pace residents seek, the pristine Atlantic Ocean and over 72 miles of uncrowded beaches are an easy 10-minute drive from downtown Melbourne. Beach goers can choose to bask in the sun at the Canaveral National Seashore Park in the north, Cocoa Beach in Central Brevard or at the Sebastian Inlet State Park at the southernmost tip of the county. The cosmopolitan city of Orlando and its countless world-famous attractions are all a little more than an hour's drive from Melbourne where visitors can enjoy the thrill of visiting such places as Universal Studios, EPCOT Center, the Kennedy Space Center, SeaWorld Orlando and, of course, the perennially-famous Disneyworld.
: : About the College/University

Founded in 1958, the Florida Institute of Technology was originally created to provide continuing education to scientists, engineers and technicians working in the space program at the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral. As the only independent, technological university in the Southeastern United States, Florida Tech's primary aim is to keep abreast of the current and anticipated needs in the developing fields of high technology. Named as one of the top 14 technical institutions in engineering by the Fiske Guide to Colleges, Florida Tech is also committed to the pursuit of excellence in the academic fields of the sciences, psychology, management and related disciplines. The 130-acre tropical campus is home to more than 2,310 undergraduate and 2,360 graduate students from all 50 U.S. states and 99 nations from around the world. Students are awarded bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees among the school's six academic colleges: the College of Engineering; College of Science; College of Aeronautics; College of Business; College of Psychology and Liberal Arts; and University College. Undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to join research activities that support local and state efforts, beach erosion monitoring, sea turtle studies, software security and energy research. Outside of the classroom, campus life revolves around the Clemente Center for Sports and Recreation and the Denius Student Center while students are also active in participating in intramural athletics, 15 intercollegiate sports teams and over 100 student-run organizations including: the Artists Guild, the Comedy Club, political, professional and religiously-affiliated groups, the weekly student newspaper, "The Crimson," International Student Service Organization, and FITV, the student-run television station.
