: : About the ESL School

Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Learning from native speaking instructors, students study from a well-developed curriculum designed to enhance their fluency and accuracy and hone their skills in the areas of structure/speaking, conversation, and reading/writing. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. As an added feature, more than 550 American colleges and universities accept the ELS Certification of English in place of the TOEFL in order to admit students to their undergraduate degree programs. ELS Language Centers is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.

: : Housing

ELS provides students with the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.

: : About the College/University

Established in 1960, Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is a four-year public institution comprised of two campuses in residential Allendale and urban Grand Rapids that each provide a fully-accredited liberal arts education to more than 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Characterized by and known for its superior student-centered teaching and learning, GVSU has been recognized by Educational Research and Evaluation, Inc. as one of "America's 100 Best College Buys" for nine consecutive years. Offering over 200 areas of academic specialization, including 69 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate programs, GVSU emphasizes that academic excellence is evident in its small class sizes taught by high-caliber faculty. GVSU students study among the university's eight degree-granting colleges: the College of Community and Public Services; College of Education; College of Engineering and Computing; College of Health Professions; College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; College of University-wide Interdisciplinary Initiatives; the Kirkhoff College of Nursing; and the Seidman College of Business. When students are not in class, many join one of the over 220 on-campus student-run organizations, including political, professional and religious groups, volunteering organizations, fraternities and sororities, international and multicultural clubs, theater, choral and music groups, academic clubs, and outdoors, backpacking and sports organizations. Many students also write for the campus newspaper, play an active role in student government, or work for the campus radio and television stations, WGVU Radio and TV. As big fans of the university's men and women sports teams, the "Lakers," GVSU students are also sure to be present to cheer their team on as they play baseball, football, basketball, golf, tennis, volleyball, and run cross-country and track and field.
