: : About the ESL School

Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Learning from native speaking instructors, students study from a well-developed curriculum designed to enhance their fluency and accuracy and hone their skills in the areas of structure/speaking, conversation, and reading/writing. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. As an added feature, more than 550 American colleges and universities accept the ELS Certification of English in place of the TOEFL in order to admit students to their undergraduate degree programs. ELS Language Centers is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.

: : Housing

Students living on-campus will be close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.

: : About the College/University

Founded in 1896, Adelphi University was the first liberal arts institution to be established on Long Island. As a nondenominational, independent institution, Adelphi is home to more than 8,000 students, including 4,100 graduate students, hailing from forty American states and fifty nations from around the world. Situated on 75 picturesque acres, the main Adelphi campus offers students intellectually-challenging degree programs among the university's eight colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences; the Honors College; the School of Business; the School of Education; the School of Nursing; the School of Social Work; the University College; and the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies. Named a 2005 Best College in the Northeastern Region by The Princeton Review, Adelphi features outstanding academic programs, particularly in the areas of fine and performing arts, sciences, and communications, while its schools of business, education, nursing, social work, and psychological studies garnered awards and international recognition. The University is also comprised of three off-campus centers: the Manhattan Center in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City; the Hauppauge Center on Long Island; and the Hudson Valley Site in Poughkeepsie, New York. Outside of the classroom, students are active within the campus community whether by joining one of 80 student clubs and organizations, cheering on the Adelphi sports teams, "The Panthers," as they compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level, or attending frequent art, music, lecture, or theater series available throughout the year.
