: : About the School

Founded in 1961, ELS Language Centers is a group of private language schools that help millions of students from more than 140 countries significantly improve their English skills in the shortest time possible and prepare them for academic study at an American college or university. With more than 40 ELS locations available across 25 U.S. states, students are exposed to different cross-cultural ideas and influences that will deepen their English communication skills and cultural understanding. Learning from native speaking instructors, students study from a well-developed curriculum designed to enhance their fluency and accuracy and hone their skills in the areas of structure/speaking, conversation, and reading/writing. Students also select from a wide variety of elective classes to study topics pertinent to their individual interests, including TOEFL Preparation, Business English, Pronunciation, U.S. Culture, and Listening & Note Taking. As an added feature, more than 550 American colleges and universities accept the ELS Certification of English in place of the TOEFL in order to admit students to their undergraduate degree programs. ELS Language Centers is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.
: : Student Countries of Origin

ELS Santa Monica Center has hosted thousands of students from more than 40 countries around the world. Recently, the majority of students have come to ELS from Asia, including Japan (40%), Korea (12%), and Taiwan (8%). Students also come from countries in Latin America (12%), Europe (16%), the Middle East (10%), and other countries.
: : Faculty Qualifications

ELS instructors are highly-qualified, native speaking professionals. Many instructors have lived and traveled abroad and have extensive training and experience teaching English to students from around the world. The personal and academic qualities of ELS instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities and to care deeply about their students.
: : Housing

ELS provides students with the opportunity to live in an off-campus residence or enjoy a homestay experience. For students who prefer a more independent lifestyle, off-campus residences provide more privacy and offer opportunities to interact with people in the community outside the campus environment. ELS also arranges homestays for those students who want to experience American culture first-hand as a member of a family and practice their conversational English. Students are encouraged to make their housing arrangements as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. Private off-campus apartments may also available; however students must make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to ask the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

ELS Santa Monica Center is situated in the heart of idyllic Santa Monica, a unique and sophisticated beachside community that is home to more than 86,000 residents. Although the area is most well-known for its trademark 3.5-mile Santa Monica Beach that appears in countless movies and TV shows symbolizing Southern California beach living, there are plenty of other things to see and do within the Santa Monica community. With the ELS Center situated on the famous pedestrian street, the Third Street Promenade - replete with charming shops, eclectic restaurants, cinemas, and lively clubs - students will find themselves centrally located within the Santa Monica community to easily stroll along the 100-year old picturesque Santa Monica Pier, people-watch along the Ocean Front sidewalk while passing by the International Chess Park or the famed Muscle Beach, or visit the weekly Farmers' Market to sample local farmers' fresh fruits, vegetables, and homemade delicacies. The celebrated bohemian feel of Venice Beach is located just south of Santa Monica and offers its visitors and residents alike with a relaxed, laid-back beach scene replete with funky shops and comfortable cafes. Santa Monica is conveniently located 13 km north of downtown Los Angeles, the film capital of the world home to great theater, music, museums, and professional sports teams, as well as Hollywood, Universal Studios, and, of course, world-famous Disneyland.
