Intensive Academic Preparation Program
: : About the ESL Program

Established in 1992, the American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI) at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) provides a challenging, academically-focused curriculum for students preparing to enroll at an American college or university, as well as for professionals wanting to improve their English fluency. In addition to attending class at the ALCI, advanced-level students may take CSUSM courses with American students and earn transferable academic credit. Academic advisors are on-hand to assist students in researching colleges or universities pertinent to their interests, and applying to the degree programs. Additionally, the ALCI provides TOEFL equivalency for students enrolling in an undergraduate degree program at CSUSM so long as they successfully complete the ALCI with a B grade. Outside of the classroom, students have plenty of opportunities to practice their newly-acquired English skills, whether at the ALCI-organized beach BBQs and bonfires, picnics and cultural celebrations, playing in intramural sports teams, or joining the Conversation Partners Program to speak with CSUSM students and learn more about American culture. The ALCI is a proud member of AAIEP, the American Association of Intensive English Programs promoting professional standards and high-quality English programs.
: : Credit Courses

Students in the advanced levels may take CSU San Marcos university courses with American students and earn transferable credit.
: : Student Countries of Origin

The ALCI welcomes more than 100 students each year from all around the world, including students from Korea (35%), Japan (35%), Latin America (18%), Europe (5%), Taiwan (3%), and other countries from around the world (4%).
: : Faculty Qualifications

All ALCI instructors hold master's degrees in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages or in related academic fields. The personal and academic qualities and years of teaching experience among the ALCI instructors make each uniquely qualified to offer meaningful language-learning opportunities to their students. Many of the faculty members have spent a large amount of time living or traveling overseas and are sympathetic to the needs of their students to help them adjust to a new culture.
: : Housing

While attending the ALCI, students have the opportunity to live in on-campus dormitories or enjoy a homestay experience. Students living on-campus are close to classes, campus activities and other students - both American and international. The homestay option is ideal for those students who want to experience American culture as a member of a family and practice their English. It is best to arrange housing as early as possible due to the limited amount of space available. The ALCI may also introduce students to nearby private off-campus apartments; however it is the students' responsibility to make their own arrangements. For more information, use the Contact Address to inquire with the school directly.
: : Surrounding Area

The CSUSM campus is situated in the foothills of San Marcos, a safe, welcoming community in the beautiful region of North San Diego County. San Marcos' 60,000 residents take advantage of the area's beautiful weather that boasts an average temperature of 77ーF to go hiking, camping and biking among the nearby trails, play tennis at first-rate tennis courts, or take in a game of golf year-round at one of the 22 courses around San Marcos. Just beyond the North San Diego County foothills begins the Anza Borrego Desert where regionally-famous spring wildflowers burst into bloom, creating a striking display of color. The famous Southern California beaches are a short drive west of the downtown area where many can be found swimming, surfing, water-skiing, or simply soaking in the sun. If you crave to get a taste of bigger city life, San Diego is a 35-minute drive south of San Marcos where you can attend cultural productions including the ballet, opera, the symphony, theatre, and countless music concerts. With San Marcos being only an hour drive from the U.S.-Mexico border, many visit Mexico's border town, Tijuana, for some duty-free shopping, sightseeing, and enjoying an authentic Mexican meal. For a weekend trip, the city of Los Angeles and its major attractions is a 150 km drive north of San Marcos' downtown area.
: : About the College/University

Founded in 1989, California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) is one of the 23 campuses within the California State University system. CSUSM offers its 7,300 undergraduate and graduate students a proud tradition of low cost, accessible education marked by an excellence in teaching. Idyllically located in the foothills of Northern San Diego County, the 304-acre campus is comprised of three academic colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, and the College of Education. CSUSM students come from a broad range of life experiences and interact closely with leading academic scholars to study popular majors including Business Administration, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Psychology, and Communication. Outside of the classroom, CSUSM students have the opportunity to become even more involved with the campus community by joining one of over 60 student-run organizations including international clubs, political groups, music, art and theater troupes, and the campus newspaper "The Pride."
